I've suffered from insomnia on and off the last twelve years. Currently in a bad stretch. More than a month of only managing 2-3 hrs a night
Last few nights have been better, with 4-5 hrs. Have no trouble falling asleep, but wake up between 3-4 and then am unable to fall asleep

I sometimes pass out from exhaustion. I'm lucky that I work from home (tutor), so I can take the time to do that.
If I feel I'm about to pass out, I just cancel the lesson and apologise to the student.
NO NAPS! It will be hard but I found that if I take even a small nap during the day my body will say "welp, thats enough sleep today"
