Interview Etiquette 101

I conduct phone interviews with all job candidates before I bring them in face-to-face.

I cannot tell you how often I hear the flick of a lighter or the whoosh of people blowing smoke in the background. I have no problem with smokers - my entire family smokes. But seriously, during an interview??

I hire people for a living, and so much of getting an interview or a job is just common sense and common courtesy.

I've heard people crack open a beer or pop their gum. And, yes, I can tell the difference. A beer can sounds different when opened.

Do you do this from home

I smoked while having a phone interview and got hired over the phone. Thank god you weren't interviewing me, OP.

People need to relax, phone interviews are stressful

They are in their own home doing something well within their rights to settle their nerves for the interview. I fail to see a problem.

Why are people who get to hire other people always petty fuckwads like this? Jesus.

Not hiring for someone smoking in their own home/car while on a phone interview is discrimination , and I'm personally against smoking.

This or doing something/talking in the background. You have my attention and this benefits YOU. Put whatever down for a second.

I don't exactly understand how smoking when on the phone with someone is discourteous.

If obviously have never done call center calls. I am a smoker, on the phone you can feel them breathing it on you.

An interview is an opportunity to showcase your professionalism. Also, it shows a low stress tolerance.

I'm not arguing that it might be a bit unprofessional, just don't see how it's discourteous.

Fair enough - maybe discourteous was the wrong verbiage on my part, but I still wouldn't recommend it.

I couldn't imagine myself paying too much attention/concerning myself with that if I were an interviewer. Guess I simply don't know.

It depends on the position I'm hiring for, too. For a field tech, not such a big deal. For a sales person, much more important.
