My father found this a few years ago in North Western Arkansas - every time I see it, I become more and more curious. Would be grateful for some insight if anyone has any to offer!! Didn't have a banana on hand but did my best to visually depict one

Definitely bone.

If you look at under high magnification, bone will show porosity.

Looks like a hoof

*to me, it looks a lot like a hoof ? Hoove? Idk how to spell it, but I'm certainly not qualified in any way to do any more than guess

I agree.

Lick it. Bone is porous and will stick to your tongue.

Ok I tried it and it had a slightly tacky result, like very light velcro

The referenced banana. I think it's pretty clever actually.

So again, I know nothing of this so I'm prob trying to look for things that aren't there but this kind of looks like the bottom of a foot to me- maybe like a working cow or something. And the dark patches feel symmetrical, like maybe a shoe was routinely applied

Unlikely, Hooves are made of keratin and don't preserve that well, furthermore they are usually thicker than the bone above them. And definitely not a cow, ungulates have cloven hooves. It would almost have to be a horse, if it was shod, but the burn marks are in the wrong place for that, the edge of a horses hoof isn't perpendicular to the ground like that. It is probably bone, but it looks more like the top of a ball-joint, like the femur which was tooled somewhat.

This is the wisdom I was hoping for, thanks so much
