Yep, it's a new intended feature, they introduced it recently. I totally reported it as a bug before realizing that... 🙄 It does technically work when the recipient opens the link in a browser - it shows them the whole post but "scrolled down" to the image in question. So the recipient better not accidentally be randomly moving their scrolling finger when the page loads or confusion is guaranteed.
I'm guessing this is where dumps come from, but I never understood downloading so many images when sharing was right there. Now I guess it makes more sense.
The former is how it used to work - but when you do it now, the link that's generated isn't just straight to the pic anymore, it's to the whole post but "scrolled down" to the pic.
On the android app? How odd. I made my bug report on June 15th and I think it changed at least a week before that. Maybe your app only updated itself now?

Firefox for Android
Bonus: Skip the ads with the uBlock Origin Addon (via the Extensions menu)

How do I access my notifications or feed from mobile web? I don't see the little bell icon unless I switch to desktop mode.

I use Firefox for android, but the imgur app as well.
Never used imgur on a browser before, might have to give a go.

Ugh, sucks. It's the Imgur equivalent of sending someone a Reddit video only for the recipient to get a comments thread instead.

I just download the image and then send it to the person?

You need to tap the image/video to open it in an 'individual' space, then you can share it. Or just do the firefox app w/ ublock origin on your phone.

It still worked for me as of yesterday, so maybe some new update in between now and then.

I dunno. Maybe it's like discord and update rollouts are different? I updated 3 days ago.

Yeah, may well be!
