I always wondered why all these dog toys made that annoying sound. Until our dog found a rabbit's nest in the spring. The sound the rabbit kits made when he found them was exactly like every squeaky toy ever made.
Imagine being surprised that the beasts we've made friends with, who have claws and fangs and are descended from wolves, like to pretend that they're eating small animals.
Maybe, but also noise in general. My dog loves to chew on the cheap plastic bottles (yes I cut off both ends) and for some reason it’s less annoying than the squeaky toys.
I doubt that. My first GSD had one for her entire life. It was like a puppy for her. If you took it away and squeaked it really slowly she would get very concerned and do whatever she could to gently take it from you. It was given to her by a friend of ours when she was a puppy and it was as big as her head. When she passed away I buried her with it.
My Maya was half Beagle and GSD and she loved her purple squeaky bear. She would nest with it, use it as a pillow, snuggle with it, and bring it to her food bowl. It survived all 15 years with her. I still have it.
Having heard the noise a small bird makes when my dog grabs it out of the air….yeah, it’s pretty spot on. Also anyone who’s heard an outdoor cat go after a bunny
My childhood dog raced to the back of our property once to incapacitate what I’d only learned 50 feet later to be a field mouse. Crunched right through the poor thing’s back legs. It sounds EXACTLY like a toy’s squeaker, but with more visceral anguish.
Couldn’t do anything else but put the little mouse out of its misery. The dog was more shocked than I was it had even caught something. Instincts run deep.

Dats a good pair of puppers. 15/10 would still give lazy pupperface a belly rub

Yes, but this is also the reason why I destroy the squeakers on every toy my German Shepherd receives.

It’s not the sound, it’s the teeth..

I've read that dogs like squeaky toys because they mimic the sound of struggling prey

Can't do anything about those natural instincts. They are hunters.

Wait until you realize what the knots are supposed to be in certain Kong dog toys.

.....go on

The knots and ropes are simulants for bones, joints, and tendons.

Mine went after a rabbit and a deer, and frogs, and lizards, and birds, and cats.

Fin fact. They put empty water bottles in some dog toys.
I thought it was just a nice sound for the dog… until my dog caught a rabbit.
The sound of crunching an empty water bottle is the same as the sound of breaking bunny ribs.
