It's a brachiopod, which is kinda like a modern-day clam or mussel. That center section is the 'foot,' which was used as an anchor
Brachiopods look like clams, but they're not closely related. (Clams have left and right shells; brachs have upper and lower shells.) This
particular group is long extinct, but other kinds of brachiopods are still found in the oceans today. The divot in the middle is the sulcus,
and it's an adaptation to help brachiopods efficiently pull water through their shells for filter feeding.
