Why do you need to register to vote? Isn't it like a "here's your passport, have fun voting!" thing?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dude, give republicans a break. How could they stay in power if they didn't cheat?

1 year ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 0

By stacking the courts, oh wait

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Greg Pallast has a great investigation on the purges. They are lulling a lot of legally dubios or straight up illegal stunts to remove low income and black votersfrom areas where they cant gerrymander effectively

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look at Alabama, a panel of white people were actively working to prevent a majority black town from voting and electing a black person.

i don't understand how americans' indifference to being disenfranchised hasn't escalated to widespread outrage or violence. Is it a frog in boiling water thing, or are people just too preoccupied with paying bills that they don't have the capacity to fight for basic rights?

Land of the "free" and home of the redneck-racists-christians that worship a guy that they would shoot in an instant if he trespassed...

I shouldn't have to be required to sign up for text or email spam just to check my fucking voter status.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that's why the State should not store your political affiliation.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you're in Britain, go vote is not an abstract, like seriously, get up, and help get these bastards gone.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Reminder to vote with a provisional ballot if you are supposed to be registered and find out the day of. It does NOT mean you can’t vote.

SMH that any black voter could even consider the party that actively benefits from stripping them of their voice

The GOP is convinced they are in the endgame now. They are so close to turning the USA into Nazi-merica, they can taste it. There is nothing they won't implement to cheat the hell out of November. This is open war, and it's time to start kicking these racist, narrow-minded, shitheads right in the balls.

I just checked mine and I don't have any problems. Huzzah. Will check again next week.

This is something that is so weird to me, having to register to vote! If you're an American citizen and can prove it you should be able to vote. In Belgium it is mandatory to vote and I was always against that but as I get older I think that's the right way to go, people have died to give you that right, the least you can do is to show up come election day and do your duty.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"So where did you leave this democracy thing, before you lost it?"

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Republicans can't win unless they cheat. They haven't won the popular vote in 20 million years so the only viable option left for them is to cheat.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Check your registration.

And while minorities are targeted most, they are by no means the only ones, especially in red and purple states. Be sure of your status before election day.

1 year ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 0

That's fucking bullshit. I get roll purges, but gotta be at least 5 years at a minimum (and preferably 6 to 10 years). But miss ONE election and you're out? That is some Class A sparkling bullshit right there.

72% of the Wyoming population voted in the midterm elections? That can't be right.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

72% of Wyoming is like 600 people.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seriously, though, I looked it up and they only had ~280,000 registered voters in 2022. About 194,000 turned out. That's more than 69%. So yeah, almost 72% turn-out. It is a small-population state, so that's not hard. And it was a high-interest year, with Liz Cheney being their Rep and all, so not unexpected.
The other 2-3% is probably normal variance--newly registered voters (just turned 18 or moved to the state, for example) or people who proactively renewed it through other means after 2022.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's ok, I'm a straight white male registered as a Republican.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 12

I hope you get better soon.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've never voted for a Republican, except against Trump in the primaries. Hence the registered Republican.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What part of the Republican platform do you actually like and support?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

None of it. I'm a Democrat. I'm just REGISTERED as a Republican to vote in their primary because Trump is the worst.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The whole “register to vote” thing is pretty crazy.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1 year ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 1

The fact that they try so very hard is a sign. Its motivation to push on.

1 year ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

whats frustrating is how effective it is. one day of rightwing media saying biden needs to step down and now the usually heavily left leaning imgur is even calling for him to step down and people are saying they wont vote for him now. literally all it took was a few articles of "maybe he is too old" and suddenly people give up and accept the tyrant.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It wasn't just one day, it was a massive effort that's been going on for a while and perpetuated by sources some people don't even realize are rightwing. It's a stupid fucking thing to believe or even consider, but don't underestimate the power of being lied to repeatedly on such a scale.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Geez...just make voting compulsory already

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That doesn't make people any less susceptible to manipulation, nor does it lead to well-informed choices.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah but it prevents a situation in which people are removed from voting rolls for no reason and provides protections such as enforcing workplaces to allow workers time to vote. Voter manipulation and well-informed voting is another topic entirely....

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Though that said there is a pretty decent argument to be made as well that compulsory voting dilutes the vote against extremism...

The political decisions of Americans have far-reaching consequences outside of the country. Canadians like myself are subject to the whims of US political machinations, with little-to-no ability to influence the results. And we're "the lucky ones". Imagine being in Haiti, or some other country that is essentially a dumping ground for American economic exploitation. Can't wait for the empire to crumble... and fearful of its devolution into fascism. Dreaming of a better world.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree, that's why it's so frustrating that its voting system is so backwards

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reiterating that having to register to vote in the first place and being able to be purged in the first place is already voter suppression.

You shouldn't be obligated to take any action to be able to partake in democracy at the most basic level.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Voter registration is such a weird concept to me as a European. The government here just sends you an invitation if you're over 18 (and a national), that's that. Throwing up hurdles for people to go and vote seems ... undemocratic?

1 year ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

In Australia we apply for our Tax file number to get a job and then when we turn 18 we have to vote. Not register to vote, we have to or we could get fined.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a life long Oregonian, same. But we also have state wide mail in voting. I've never seen a line of voters in my state. Mile long lines for VooDoo Donuts, but never for fundamental rights.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So jealous.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Summed up America?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, thats the point. Its how the minority party has kept in control for years. Voting day should also be a holiday but here we are, bc theres a higher percentage of republicans in business owners and retirees.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wait, yall don't get time off to vote?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nooope. I think theres a law that we're supposed to be allowed to take leave (paid or unpaid) to vote, but I've never met an employer who would honor that. I had to give a lot of warning to get my PTO approved and it wasn't a service job or anything. Many retail and service managers might cut your hours or fire you for something as small as that, esp if they sus youre blue when theyre red. Mail in ballots are essential. A holiday would be better.

UK: Before every election I get a form that gives details of my registration. It asks if anything has changed since last time and if not, then I have nothing to do. Until I move home, die or add another name to the household, my card will duly arrive. Talking of which, I'm off to vote in a bit. There's a real chance of removing the Tory MP (Craig Williams, who was parliamentary private secretary to Sunak, and who was caught placing a bet on the date of the election!) Every vote counts!

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

What do you have to do if you die? Asking for a friend..

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Decompose?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've just looked him up to see his constituency and, for the first time, saw a picture of him. What a stereotypical shit-eating-grinned Tory in the same mold as Tories going back 50+ years. He's 39 but looks at least a decade older than that. Good luck getting the cnut out.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You shouldn't judge someone by their looks, but I have to absolutely agree with you! Thankfully, since Sunak finally got around to distancing himself from the chinless wonder, I no longer have to look at the posters of him that people have been putting up. I have now cast my vote, and I'm looking forward to seeing him gone tomorrow.

im not a minority, female or even registered as democrat and have found myself purged 3 times in the past few years here in AZ, without notice or explanation. even found myself still registered but "moved" to a new voting area. if i tried to vote in the same place where i usually did, about a mile from my house, i would not be allowed too. they moved my location 12 miles further away but the old voting place still exists. seriously everyone needs to go fucking check. like right the fuck now.

1 year ago | Likes 282 Dislikes 0

US voting system always is "good" for a big wtf-moment. Why isn't the vote on a Sunday/Holiday? Why have people to register (instead of automatic being allowed to vote at 18)? Why are your voting areas sometimes so far from your homes? How can you be purged? Why aren't Inmates allowed to vote? WTF?!

1 year ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I can answer the first question. Elections are held on Tuesday so that 18th century farmers wouldn't have an excuse for missing church.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ya's don't even get a democracy sausage for voting. The US is such a weird place.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Well the why is obvious, it gives control over the voting process to certain groups.

My question is, why the hell does anyone accept this? But then again, they vote for trump, stranger things happen in that country

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

don't you guys have voting laws or whatever?

1 year ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

Ahhahhahhahhahaha....

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"laws" are mostly for show over here. The only legal protections are for the ruling/owning class, not us.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Flavor of the week.

Basically, unless it’s literally written in stone, it can be changed to suit whatever political party is in power at the time. And it happens a lot

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Except one party grants rights and the other removes them.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

some but they dont mean much here. like one of the main bills they are trying to pass here this year is giving the republican legislature direct control over how the electoral college voters vote. meaning regardless of who we vote for here they can straight up direct them to vote for trump. which would make voting here meaningless. they keep trying for it. https://www.thedailybeast.com/disturbing-bill-would-let-arizona-legislators-ignore-election-results

1 year ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

Kinda already shows that voting is meaningless there and that only the electoral college matters.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 15

electoral college only affects the Presidential race as well

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a black female dem in Texas. I check my shit monthly. I don't trust gov. hotwheels

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This is the way.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just think, if you were a minority and tried to vote at your usual location, you'd probably be arrested (at a minimum).

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Lmao, what kinda fucking hellhole do you live in? Do you guys not have laws to protect you or is laws against voting fraud too socialist?

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I check often. As of today, I was no longer registered to vote, but I was back at the beginning of June. I am in NC, too. It doesn't matter where you live, be sure to check, check often, and do everything you can to stay registered to vote to end the madness!

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Gerrymandering is a hell of a thing, isn't it?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

WV here, for the first year ever they re-upped my voters registration without a notary. I need to get it notarized to vote now. Small by comparison but I felt like it was a subtle way to decrease voter turnout. The voter suppression is in full swing this election... Can't imagine why.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Trump loyalists are in charge of Az elections, no way will he lose Az, like Pen, Ga, Fl

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're putting them so far away to make it as hard as possible for poor people to vote and the system is rigged against minorities, women etc. so they can do whatever they want and keep them from voting. The US is majorly fucked and has been fucked for many decades. It's time for you guys to redo the whole thing.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The fact that you have to register at all is dumb. In Finland you just walk to your local place to vote, and vote

1 year ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

It's all a scam to prevent 'undesirables' from voting and it goes way back.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Yah, can anyone explain the logic behind the fact of needing to register? Probably using voting fraud or something as an excuse, but plenty countries in the world where they figured that out. Same as healthcare and gun control and whatnot, america is behind on pretty much everything… but they usually do have a poor excuse for it.
So what is it for the voting registration bull?

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Registration requires a form of ID issued by the government. A LOT of minorities do not have that because the system is against them (long standing systemic shit too long for a single comment), so it's significantly harder for them to register to vote. Republicans LOVE this because minorities are more likely to vote Democrat. Then even if you manage to get registered they put the polling stations in inconvenient spots, like not on a bus route, so again, if you're poor w/o a car, get fucked.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But! But! Somebody told me it's the electorate's fault for being so "apathetic"!

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yah obviously its just to be able to influence the voting process, that much was clear, but the ID excuse makes sense. Over here you can vote as soon as you are 18, but you would ofcourse need ID, which is a requirement to have (some places as young as 12 years old). Not having an ID really is a problem that the system generally fixes quickly for you.

But lacking that i can get where the voting registration bull comes from. Paired with “illegals voting”-propaganda ofcourse

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah to get an ID you need a copy of your birth certificate, a second ID that doesn't need a picture (most people use their social security card), and some form of proof of address, but stuff like the cable bill doesn't count. So if you are crashing at a friend's place and the bills are in his name, nope. If your shit parents refused to give you a copy of your birth certificate (you can't request a new one without ID!), nope. Plus they're not super cheap, for some people it's unaffordable.
