Scientists just cut HIV out of immune cells using CRISPR!

And the cells stayed HIV-free even after re-exposure. A cure could finally be within reach.

In a groundbreaking advance, scientists have successfully used CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to eliminate HIV-1 DNA from the genomes of human immune cells. Unlike existing treatments that suppress the virus, this method completely removes the genetic blueprint of HIV from infected T-cells.

In lab tests using cells from real patients, not only was the virus removed, but the edited cells also resisted reinfection—an unprecedented level of viral control.

The study marks a crucial step toward a potential cure for HIV. Current antiretroviral therapies require lifelong adherence and only manage the infection; stopping treatment typically allows the virus to return. By contrast, the CRISPR technique offers a permanent solution by targeting and excising the virus at the genetic level, with no observed toxicity. This breakthrough may pave the way for clinical treatments that fully eradicate HIV reservoirs in the body—long considered one of the biggest challenges in the global fight against the disease.

I’ve been waiting for this technology to progress more because I need to fix my immune system and no medicine or treatment exists for that or really any autoimmune diseases

3 months ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 1

I think autoimmune disease is a bit complex for gene editing currently as the majority are not reliant on a single gene. However they are starting phase 1/2 trials for CAR-T cell therapy for some autoimmune diseases which seem to be promising.

Nah, having a period for a title tells me one of three things: 1) they're a bot, so fuck 'em; 2) they've stolen someone else's post, copying and pasting everything down to the title, so fuck 'em; or 3) they were somehow able to come up with a full, informative description, but they couldn't think of even the simplest title that wasn't just punctuation, so fuck 'em.

Wasnt this already done in China?

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like as an edit to babies before birth. Are we basically doing a follow up study to a Chinese treatment? I don't want to say we're behind but the outcome was already mostly expected...just done right this time.

EBT-101 is in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial to assess safety and efficacy in adults with HIV-1 on stable ART. The trial has completed dosing, with participants in follow-up. Initial results show EBT-101 is safe, with no serious adverse events, but it did not prevent HIV viral rebound after ART interruption; all participants who stopped ART experienced viral rebound.

This news source from last year says they were able to delete SIV (a similar virus) from the cells of primates, not humans. Since then, further clinical studies with HIV in humans did not permanently delete HIV in humans, but research is ongoing.

not new.

And yet, some people may not have seen it.

That’s so last year.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not exactly old either. It is less than a year old. In scientific literature, it would be considered current.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also how to cure it as a whole if you have it and not only some cells is the problem afaik

3 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Well not really there’s an theory about why Europeans have lower rates than they should based on network math even taking into account behavior/education/prevention and some interesting exceptions to the rule that point to the spread of HIV being mitigated by genetics—like some are immune

3 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Sadly doesn't matter trump admin just killed all the funding for this and it will be set back decades now

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If this works...couldn't this technique also be used to cure Shingles?

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In theory, yes. In practice, not likely to happen any time soon if ever. We already have other approaches to treatment and prevention for shingles, which has a fatality rate of less than 0.1%. HIV on the other hand is 100% fatal if left untreated. Therapy R&D resources are limited. Pharmaceutical/biotech researchers tend to want to direct those towards ailments that are more severe (i.e., fatal) ailments before conditions that have lower fatal incidence rates. It's easier to secure funding.

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not sure a lot of effort will go into a Shingles cure seeing that we have a vaccine for it as well as for chicken pox now

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but it's a long path from successful tests involving cells in a lab, to available treatment. Don't get me wrong - this is an amazing finding, but it needs replication and will need far more testing before human clinical trials can begin. On top of that, we have RFK Jr. right now in charge of Health and Human services and TACO is president. They'll be massive barriers to continued research and could hamper the approval process for human trials after they're gone.

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

did it only cost 250k in a blender?

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hope they got their funding secured.

RFK Jr. just cancelled funding for bird flu vaccine. He is doing everything to give it a chance to mutate and begin to spread straight from human to human.

As someone raised in a medical family, and who's had friends with AND dated 3 people with endometriosis: Good fucking luck. So many bad doctors out there who do not take women seriously enough about endo, OR they just say "Have a fuckin baby, that'll fix it!" And if you have it or what I described has been your experience, I am so sorry. I can't ever feel or understand the pain for you, but I've seen it firsthand enough to empathize at least a bit.

HIV was only ever a death sentence for poor people. Magic Johnson has had it for 40yrs.

3 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 15

That's a woeful misunderstanding of the infection. Mean wealthy and powerful people died from the infection.

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only ever? It's too bad Freddie Mercury was living in poverty and couldn't afford to cure himself. Plenty of gay and straight wealthy people's lives were ended early due to this. You think we had a cure in the 80s? Magic had his therapy in the mid 90s

3 months ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

It's absolutely true that being able to afford the medication greatly increases your chance of survival. But as a sex educator I always want to add a little asterisk to this statement.

It's kiiind of misleading because it's like saying cancer is only a death sentence for poor people. Every case of HIV is different, how aggressive the strain is, how many strains someone has contracted, and how diligent they are about taking care of themselves.

Money absolutely helps, but it's not a cure.

3 months ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Yeah Freddy Mercury was rich a fuck too

3 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Exactly this. When I used to volunteer at an HIV clinic, there was a man there who contracted it way back when it was known as GRID (gay related immune deficiency).

He got on a special trial medication and survived when so many around him did not, even though they were all about the same socioeconomic level.

Just like cancer, there's not one way to treat HIV. You have to find the right cocktail that works for you, and if you don't it doesn't matter how rich you are.

3 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Before the current crop of antiretroviral drugs came around in the late '90s, AIDS killed rich and poor alike. Rich people tended to stay alive slightly longer because they could afford better supportive care, but: Freddie Mercury, Rock Hudson, Gia Carangi, Isaac Asimov, Liberace, Anthony Perkins, Arthur Ashe, Eazy-E, Roy Cohn, Althea Flynt (wife of Larry, of Hustler magazine), none of them were what you'd call "poor".

3 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I think theres a bit more of a spectrum between "poor" and "Magic Johnson" honestly, I think HIV killed plenty upper middle class folks, but I don't have the statistics in front of me right now.

They declared that a long time ago. "Christians" have been declaring that AIDS was God's wrath on gays since AIDS was discovered in the '80s. I was there.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I never thought I'd live through another Reagan but here we are

3 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Reagan would call Trump a traitor, and Trump would call Reagan a RINO. And this is NOT defending Reagan in any way. Reagan was terrible, and, really, the ONLY thing I can give him is that he wouldn't sell out our country. His foreign policies were... problematic, and his economic policies began our shift towards corporate plutocracy.

Trump is just THAT much worse. He's a fraud, a grifter, an idiot, a bigot, a felon, a traitor, and several types of sex offender, including rapist and pedophile.
