I've always been able to wake up from a nightmare as soon as I realized it was a nightmare. But it usually takes me a long time to figure out that it's not actually happening - at least for the last 10+ years, most of my nightmares are more the psychological horror type rather than slasher film type. I.E. waking up in the morning and my wife, son, and dog are all just missing, or getting a phone call that one of my siblings died unexpectedly.

Maybe put a dream tracking device on your dream family so you can check it and see they're all just at the grocery store?
