The point was that, even with all of that, Frodo was able to see the “humanity” in Gollum and empathize with him. Whether he deserved it or not is up to the reader, but it is true that if Frodo hadn’t shown Gollum kindness, he would have failed on his mission. He couldn’t throw the ring into the fire. That act of kindness, foolish or not, saved the world.
