Its funny. I love so many individual bits of the HGG movie in terms of design and performance, but the whole just felt oddly flat.

The saddest thing is that Adams regretted his depression influencing him to give a series a downer ending and intended to write a final book
that would end things on a brighter note but he died before he got the chance.

It's horrible b/c it's the best story ever, with one of the best casts ever, Adams WAS INVOLVED,..and it still missed the mark.
In order of quality.... Books/BBC TV Series/Audio Books/Books again/Movie.

Didn't they accidentally leave him on a planet for like 10,000 years?
JFredPrufrock
576 billion years, actually.
576,000,003,579 years, I know I counted... The 1st 10 million years were the worst, & the 2nd 10 million years, they were the worst too.
The third ten million I didn't enjoy at all. After that I went into a bit of a decline.

The best conversation I had was over forty million years ago. And that was with a coffee machine.

His sense of humor had a substantial impact on mine, along with Monty Python (who were friends with him, John Cleese did a cameo in an 1/
Episode of Doctor Who written by Douglas Adams as a personal favor) 2/2
back when writing was what mattered on the show... (get off my lawn)

That will always be a rubbish version of the real thing for some of us. v
IconicM
I wouldn't call it rubbish, just not as good.

Agreed.
Marvin, not the art.
I mean, Alan Rickman. (I've never seen the miniseries or any version other than the movie)
You should go watch it. It might be on Hulu. The effects are bad by today's standards but it all works so perfectly.
I like Rickmans take on it. But Stephen Moore talking into a bucket to get the desired tone has it won for me I'm afraid
New Marvin is "Too Cute" to fit. Marvin needs to look not entirely quite right, the original captured that perfectly.
Bex316
TV Marvin is in the movie
I dunno. Lifelong H2G2 fan here, saw the BBC TV serial when I was like 12, IMO the movie Marvin is the best. Sorry, can't beat Alan Rickman.
ilovebees
I like the BBC design but Alan Rickman is just so good.
BobMcVagene
Nearly 20 years of HHGG here. I never seen that old film version. I liked the new ball one. It's not about appearance, It's about persona.
13fingerfx
I Prefer Stephen Moore’s voice (TV & the radio show) but the Marvin design from the movie is possibly the most right they got it.
OneOneNiner
Well you're not wrong about Alan Rickman
That will always be a less perfect visualisation of the real thing for some of us.
Exactly but the original series did follow the books to the letter where as the film lost so much because it didn’t. A true hhg2tg fan knows
Those aren't the books. It's the the radio series I grew up listening to. Word for word identical to the books but with sound effects+music.
Theniyaal
Radio series is NOT word for word with the books. Lots of changes in the story.
I never listened to the whole thing. Only parts here and there but I already know it's worth every praise. I need to listen someday.
You do.
