Do the yellow lines usually mark speed bumps in this area? I’m very interested whether simply any change in markings could result in the intended behaviour, whether associated with speed bumps or not.
You're absolutely right, speeding down a place where you could hurt and kill someone -is- illegal! Considerably more illegal and immoral than painting a tiny strip of concrete, at that. It's a good thing you were bothered by the former and not the latter! Otherwise that'd make you an asshole.
I think the comment comes from it being quite common that people brake basically as late as possible, slow down only to get over the hump and then zoom away again.
Ah, okay, gotcha. But yeah, what @Majorbobbicus said. Although you're right insofar as many people on YouTube or social media will just use "DIY" instead of "DIY tutorial".
Also gotta give plenty of advanced warning down the road so they don't only get ONE (last) opportunity to slow down before they clobber someone crossing.
Actual method from WW2, by the way - and not just effective against bikes. There's a reason American Jeeps rather quickly started to have large poles with wire cutters mounted in front of the radiator during the early days of occupying Germany. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_catcher
Someone did something like that in a rural area near Ottawa Canada a number of years ago (couldn't find it online, pre-Internet). A huge bump, painted flat black so it couldn't be seen at night until too late, and it wasn't a low speed road, so quite the shock for some people!
Some years ago, my brother lived next to a street that was on an incline and someone in the neighbourhood with a Nissan Micra kept speeding, going double the allowed speed at least. Eventually a bump was installed halfway down the road. Then this dipshit came racing downhill again and became airborne for a moment. The guy was ok but a bit rattled and bruised. The car wasn't doing so well, though. Had to be towed.
... into your house. Or your neighbor's house. Look at that curb and how close the houses are to the road. I'm all for screwing over the speedsters, but I'd suggest stopping them in a way that doesn't also screw over the neighborhood.
It shows that small change can have an effect. Now put some big flower pots in or whatever can be safely installed to make the road more narrow and a bit curvy. Soon the road will return to being a street

Reminds me of a Malcolm in the middle episode
Amousewithchees
Then a month later the city comes in and removes it cause it isn't "up to code" and schedules putting in their own for 5 years later.
alexburgers
Then the guy with the car who speeds past is a neighbor, and uses his powers of NIMBY to protest installation, and 5 years becomes 'never'.

hotLipsMilo
The village in Wales where I loved, used to full a welly with concrete and throw it in the road. They soon slow down.
thatwoodguy
There's some guy in the American South who got tired of this shit and what he did is he bolted down a 2x4 onto the roadway as a speed bump
ReadyToBeAnnoyed
There are a whole lot of shitty brakes in that area.

I have assholes like this in my neighborhood. Seriously considering putting up a sharp thin wire at neck height...
ByThePowerOfSCIENCE
Don't consider it too seriously - that's premeditated murder.
SecondSince
Obviously. It's just an exclamation of frustration. But unless you spell it out people here don't seem to get hyperbole... :/

I would like to thank you all for proving my point.

Sometimes, illegal is right. See: punching Nazis.

Explain to me how this harmless vandalism is dangerous. Go ahead. Pick up the shovel.

Oh never mind, my bad for giving you the benefit of the doubt. You really are just a dumb asshole.

Thank you for that riveting spiel, Moral Orel.
cosonfused
what I don't get is: it's super visible and they still brake at the very, very last second. too late even.
corylusavellana
Welcome to the world of drivers, nothing more than 2 metres in front of the bumper exists.
SecondSince
Yes, because they are idiotic selfish assholes.
tarataqa
It's funnier to do that in this staged video. Hint: everyone is in on the joke.
edalton454
Are you not familiar with speed humps?
myeyesthegogglesdonothing
Are you? Speed bumps, especially ones painted like that, do not sneak up on you that you have to slam on your brakes like that.
cosonfused
Did... did you even read what i said? From what i said it's clear i know what they are.

it is an ad for an hardware store

It's not a cross-walk, it's a fake speed bump.
LenzKist74
People still cross the road,... or do they magically teleport across? *sigh*

I thought this was going to a whole different place with that wire at first.

Exactly! “is Imgur gonna show people getting maimed etc.? What’s happening here…? Ohh.”

Yup. Those wires were strung up at neck height. Equally effective and gruesome.

Give them a couple weeks to get used to it and then install the bump and a camera.

In some places where I live drivers swerve so that one wheel rolls on the gutter. It's caused some nasty accidents.

Transmission maybe, if it's a low enough car. Think about the tires/rims/shocks tho

Yes but also no, they were referring to the can opener bridge. Chews over size vehicles up and spits them back out. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_Southern%E2%80%93Gregson_Street_Overpass
Hammerwell
It gets even better when the overpass sits in a trough. For extra fun with long wheelbase vehicles.
Gippo53
Simple and effective ... at least for 2 or 3 days :)
RaZorHamZteR
But when they're back to full speed u make a real speedbump and see all the speed-cunts crash and burn...

... into your house. Or your neighbor's house. Look at that curb and how close the houses are to the road. I'm all for screwing over the speedsters, but I'd suggest stopping them in a way that doesn't also screw over the neighborhood.

No no. A huge bump so the cars and mopeds fly over all the buildings. No worries. 😁👍

kaarbaakimgr
There are steel “anti-bird” spikes you can purchase that will definitely slow them down.

Then you bring the surprise. add 1 inch iron bar now and then.

Or just make an actual bump and watch them catch air.
