Went with a friend to get fresh catnip from the farm market once. His cats didnt care about it. Then someone stepped on it with shoes on, crushed it, and the cats wouldn't leave it alone the rest of the day.

Yes. Different for different cats. I didn't know, but my vet told me, that catnip mimics sex hormones, so (1) it doesn't work on kittens before sexual maturity, and (2) female cats will often behave as if in heat.

We have three cats, two enjoy the nip. But one just rubs her face in it and goes to sleep. The other becomes insane for about 15 minutes then sleeps for hours.
