Was fascinated so had to read up more on the Porpita so figured I’d share this here: https://30a.com/blue-button-facts/

It's scientific name is also "Porpita porpita", which makes it even better

And this is why I'm glad our ancestors crawled out of the sea 400 million years ago

A 2-centimeter large organism is a predator? I mean... I understand, but the scales involved are... just, it's unintuitive that predation can occur on that scale. In the sense of "Literally; where is the food?" But, again, I understand everything about it, it's just... so non-visible to an animal of my size/scale.

I'm a reasonably-fast reader, but shit...were they paying by the second for subtitles?

2 years ago | Likes 111 Dislikes 2

Same, I was like "wait, what do they feed on?"

I know, they went so fast and then there were big gaps between the text, they could have filled those gaps by making the text stay longer.

TIL Thank you.

It’s weirdly cute.

I used to see these all of the time in South Padre Island. They would wash up.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They are only a little bit venemous.

Cool but I didn't enjoy having a pause to read the subliminal subtitles

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is actually a very accurate discription of the human body.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Two mouths if you take rectal medication.

I am a colony of organisms. With my biome I am a legion of mouth

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Meanwhile I'm a colony of assholes with a single mouth

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I think about this far too often already.

No, there are many, many mouths, but it's best not to think about it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hahaha oh no. This is true

We liked this post

Not entirely. You're a colony of cells that forms one large organism. The same is true for every individual hydroid within the colony that is a blue button. They're multicellular animals with a complete metabolism who could survive and reproduce on their own, but they perform specialized tasks when part of a hydrozoan colony.

One of those subcolonies hallucinates 24/7 and has declared itself king over all the others

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I didn't vote for him.

like the one in a man-o-war that gets to have the giant gas bladder
