Need some help identifying this...

Jul 5, 2023 10:54 PM

This was found on a friend's home. Home is originally from the 80s in Florida. Ideally, they'd be taking this down when the new gutters go up, but before tossing it out, trying to figure it out.

Google has failed us so far, unless this is a fishing pole or part of a bagpipe mounted to the outside of the house. This seems unlikely.

The tube seems to be PVC.

Flood meter. When water reaches the meter - shit's flooded, yo.

Bad news: Its upside down. Good news: Early warning detector.

That's just outstanding. You earned that +1!

Is there a cable coming out of the top? Coaxial by any chance? Might be an antenna of some sort.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, some sort of cable. But it seems so short for a standard 80s/90s style antenna. Can't tell if it's coax.

amateur radio stuff maybe.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That was my first guess. There's probably a coil of wire inside the pvc.

Sure looks like an antenna of some kind. Any legible markings?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Nothing we could see, likely as old as the house.

See if this is helpful https://www.antennas.com/product-category/dpv-series/page/2/

It is! As a lot of the answers here have favored an antenna, I see a lot of vhf/scanner antenna that look similar in design, if not exact.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If not an antenna, my guess is a sensor for a whether station thing.

Alot of good answers so far, but we also use them for wireless camera transmission, because they can usually handle WiFi bandwidth. That huge F-type coax cable is expensive stuff also.

It’s clearly an old turbo encabulator , they were popular in the south back In The 80’s

It's a cellular signal repeater antenna from back in the day. It would connect to a wall mounted unite that kinka looks like the door chime for your door bell button. It's useless nowadays. If you pull back the rubber boot just above the mounting bracket you'll find an F connector like you have for cable TV which can be unscrewed. Or you can just cut the cable.

Outstanding, not at all surprising it's old in this setting, too

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you tear it appart, you'll likely find one of those old fashion car cell antennas made of wire with the multiple curls that people used to put on the back window of their car.

Were these used to allow better cell phone reception before towers were more ubiquitous? Or did they serve some other purpose, like for a home alarm? As I recall, most home security systems back then used land lines.

Funny you should ask considering I have been in the alarm industry, on the residential side for over 33 years. We did use cellular back in the 90's. It was very rare and quite expensive both the install and the monthly service. It was mostly used as a back up in crtitical condition locations such as power plants.

Awesome information, my man. Thank you!

Where does the rest of the line lead to in the house?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Hard to tell, writing in the house is a little jacked. Some switches go to nothing, junction boxes that wire... Nothing.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How many wires / what gages are going in? Is it live?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

One thick cable, and the main reason we're digging into it is because we can't tell if it's live and would like not to meet ol sparky

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Maybe a scanner antenna?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

We had been speculating if it was some sort of receiver for a very old remote or security system of some sort, so that's as plausible as anything!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's clearly a ten incher.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is that wire coax?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Dongle.

what is the deal with the laser light? Is the beam below it cut wavy? It’s all very unsettling

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can we get a banana up there please? Need to see how big it is.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

When you get flooding in the house you pull on that and it flushes all the water out like a toilet. Standard on Florida homes.

"Tape measure"

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

Google spotted that, too, lol.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

why the quotations? is it suspicious

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Because it's a direct quotation of what somebody said

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No tape measure should ever be trusted. That's why you measure like 6 times, cut once and... SONOFABITCH

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Looks like an older Marine band VHF antenna.

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

This is my guess, how close are you to water?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well it's Florida, so never super far, but they're near Orlando, not on the coasts.
