Need to know... rising...

This is what the FAQ (https://help.imgur.com/hc/en-us/articles/26510803013787-Most-Viral-and-User-Submitted) says about it. What's not clear to me is whether "Rising" posts have already passed through User Sub / Popular. Is it based on the total upvotes they have received, or is it more about the rate at which it is receiving upvotes? Looking at posts in User Sub / Popular compared to User Sub / Rising, there doesn't seem to be a consistent theme to which have more upvotes.

user_sub

It means a post is starting to get enough upvotes that it could break into the Front Page. This was much more meaningful when Front Page was 1k upvotes and rising images had to have a few hundred at the very least

I don't know if anyone has nailed down the formulae yet, but it doesn't seem to be just about total number of upvotes, but there is a time component too.

iirc correctly it goes New to Rising to Popular timewise (and then falls back down through the rank based on total engagement compared to other posts, e.g. lots of upvotes on popular might be an older post so itll start sinking while another with less votes is on its way up and they will pass each other in the feed)

Rising just means it's getting enough upvotes it could break into the front page. There's not really a timeline to it

When a post gets a certain number of upvotes in a certain amount of time it appears to people browsing the "rising" section, which allows more people to see it. This is to prevent popular posts from dying in usersub, since--if posts just stayed in the 'new' section--fewer and fewer people would see them over time as new posts appeared. Not sure what the exact cut off is, but there's always a notification when your post gets 8 upvotes and when it gets 21 upvotes so it's probably one of those

Why do I see posts in new and popular? Are they supposed to disappear from new once they've made it to popular?

Something similar happens when a post moves from 'rising' to 'popular', but I'm less clear on where the cutoff for that is. There also used to be a fourth option besides 'newest', 'rising', and 'popular' called "controversial", which I miss a lot. Posts that had nearly as many downvotes as upvotes would appear in 'controversial', meaning they were less likely to just fizzle out and more likely to keep getting comments and votes. Idk why they got rid of this and I think they should bring it back.

Especially because it prevented astroturfers and people who use bots/brigades from just killing a post by matching every upvote with a downvote. Someone who can do that can basically kill a post at will now because it behaves exactly like a post that just got no engagement.
