[OC] My first sketchbook

Jul 18, 2025 1:47 AM

I started sketching per a recommendation from a therapist. For my first sketchbook, I went with something I could chuck into a rucksack. It went with me to the mountains of Vancouver, the jungles of Heredia, the beaches in Puntarenas, and now rests at my desk in Montreal. Some of these drawings barely represent what they're supposed to be. They're very much exercises in SEEING, trying to capture essence, they're messy, but that's how I like them. Being an engineer, everything is always about precision, and in 3D maths, even more so. I also like stickers, that's why there's so many. I put stickers on everything. Some of the stickers were gifts.

A lemon at YVR. Beautiful airport.

A decorative jug from a pub somewhere in BC. Can't remember where. Good moose meatballs though. Close to Litton I think.

A trellis plant in a Thai restaurante here in Montreal. The food was so-and-so, decent and strong cocktails. Not watered down; which is way too common. Good ambience though. Cute waitstaff too, but that's kind of a given in MTL.

Family: Succineidae[Ambersnails]. Genus: Novisuccinea. Species: ? [Most likely Ovalis due to area where it was sketched]. Beautiful shell colours on this one, had a spotted appearence.

A singer I saw close to Parc Toussaint-Louverture. We talked for a bit, we were both unemployed at the time.

Left: Playa Jaco in Costa Rica. About 20 meters from the sea. Good surfing spot.
Right: A jar of honey from a friend's apiary.

A plant at a friend's house. The cat chews most of the leaves off.

Mont Royal Park flower. Not sure which, didn't have my reference book with me.

Left: Leaves in a national park, they were home to a family of small green frogs[Their sketch was ruined by the rain].
Right: A friend's bent-bottle art project. Her first two broke before she was able to get one to bend enough.

A gun from a friend's RPG character who is a sicario. Inspired by the guns I saw where I grew up. The phrase is literal latin for "God King'. (His character is very religious)

A family swimming in a lake in the border between ON and QC.

Idefix tax.
There are some other sketches, but I have yet to scan them or clean them. If you liked this, I'll try and get to it sooner.
Thank you for reading.
I also publish audiobooks and e-books fully indie. No amazon, no FB, no insta, no DRMs, just my website VS the world... and bluesky, but I'm eyeing them suspiciously just in case, you can find links here: https://bsky.app/profile/rrcooper.bsky.social
