I hate that corporations can just cancel or change service anytime and short of a giant collective lawsuit with low odds of success, there's nothing you can do. But if you cancel a contract or stop paying your bills, they got you no problem.
In this particular you could request your bank to return the debit (I'm assuming the payment was an automated direct debit) up to like a month later, and cancel the netflix plan with a comment.
Since THEY changed the contract it's legally murky enough and administratively complex enough that they probably won't do anything about one (arguably half) payment.
Don't forget that (in the US at least) they'll also hide behind an arbitration clause to deny you constitutional rights to a fair and free trial. Because somehow corporations can make legally binding terms that void your rights... often buried in text you'd need a trained lawyer with an english doctorate to understand
Network Attached Storage. If you have more than one computer, it's handy as file storage. With the modern NAS boxes from Synology you can get some nice features that let you either access data offsite or share/watch movies/video/etc you have stored when travelling. pfSense is a software distro meant to act as a firewall. and VPN in the sense you VPN remotely into your home network to access the NAS and other stuff.
a VPN is just a way to remote communicate with another network, the use in tunneling to appear from a remote location is secondary. It's primary use is to have a private netowkr and connect either with a computer or another remote network and link them together securely.
I just learned what plex is. I have a Mac. I’ve been reading about how hard drives from the 90’s are failing the music industry and am finally thinking about raid for my music and shows and science projects.
a 2 disk mirror is more than enough, after that, backup in more than one place. I tend to go, computer, to NAS, to external storage, to offsite storage. oh, and with M-F snapshots on the NAS.
Can highly recommend Synology's lineup. Just the automatic backup of photos from my phone directly to the server alone has made it a worthwhile purchase.
The bad truth is, running your own homelab or network storage is gonna cost some. You can try keeping it simple, buy some used, but it's not gonna be free.
I’ve learned a thing or two. No prebuilt storage. Over purchase. And upgrading from a 2009 MacBook has been, um, well I literally waited till this year. I made that fucker last.
Who / what do you use for offsite backup on your Synology? Been wanting to do that for home use but everything I've come across appears to be geared / priced towards business-level storage & data transfer.
Another friend and linux admin. Having a DNS secondary friend is nice. But if you need a service, you can always get backblaze, last I checked they were very good pricewise.

I started using a seedbox. Monthly cost of one streaming service, but a server with 10gb/s connection speed

I recently upgraded my NAS. Got an Asustor 12 bay NVMe. Popped a bunch of 2tb’s in there. It’s fast as fuck!

What streaming service is this and where are you located?

Contracts are only there to protect the company not the consumer.
Verizon wireless routinely redoes already signed contracts but it you don't sign the new one then you lose service. Even mid contract.

Does arbitration clause work when you pirate their stuff then?

We cancelled netflix back when Jade Vagina Egg Lady got her own show. I heard you can just download shit off the internet.

"Try streaming from an area where the plan is available" is TELLING you to LOUDLY to use a VPN.
DanielAsparagus
Recognized vpn ips are blocked.
Zreen
What about unrecognized ones
DanielAsparagus
Idk but they always have mine figured out.
NotGoodAtUserNames1
Same. It always takes a bit, but every new streaming service figures out the VPN sooner or later.

A home NAS, Plex or Jellyfin, a pfsense firewall, VPN...
DanielAsparagus
What’s a NAS? I have a VPN. What’s a pfsense?

Yeah, I'm in the middle of moving to a new apartment, and I'll get my own fiber soon, time to check out prices on those NAS boxes.
Dstar99a
Literally just put whatever platform you are looking at onto your old pc. Linux won’t care you didn’t buy the prebuilt box.
Clockworkdancerobot
Synology 2 bay is a good start. they can vary in price but they are good. Support is VERY good for the OS. QNAP is ok too.
LittleRobot71
If you want a hand feel free to DM me, that sort of thing is my hobby. And Jellyfin all the way.

Plus you can SSH in and drop a script to copy data or snapshot it. They're really nice. Offsite backup is easy.
