Spooky shadow ghosts? Crazy what they were called and people were just like 'yeah okay.' Black licorice is gross. I know some people love them, tastes like strong chemicals to me.
Apparently the problem is not obvious unless you know that "licorice pals" is the new name. Couple people in the comments say these used to be called something, uh, way worse.
I cannot I'm good consicence post the old name, but I found this reddit post. this one hits all the bases : r/oldpeoplefacebook https://share.google/hvH8dG9E1DZPlb0pu
old peopled called them “n* babies” apparently. because I guess they had nothing better to do than pretend they were eating black babies like a klansman giant from jack and the beanstalk??
My mom used to call them that, because her mom called them that. She of course stopped once she realize that i was massively offensive, but when your a little kid you dont know better some times.
Couple years ago 50 Cent visited Hungary and found a hard candy called “Negro“. They made a big fuss about it, there was a comment war on Instagram. We never had colonies or black slaves, and the candy is named after the inventor, Pietro Negro.
Yeah in Belgium there is a cookie that in the common tongue is still called "n word titties", not sure if they are common in other countries but they're called Melo Cakes.
okay, sure, the word wasnt that bad and all, but holy shiat that picture is maximum racist, people were wildly naive back in the day and really didnt think of anything while pulling shit like that...
Hmmm... in france and maybe parts of Europe (switzerland at least) we got those thin chocolate..."mounds" ? filled with kind of semi-solid whip cream. So these used to be called "Tetes de Nègre" before, it was literally on the packaging and all. Pretty wild. They got renamed obviously (much later though) to simply "Tete de Chocolat". No idea why they changed *that* name /s
Neekerin suukko - negro kiss in Finnish. Just wild stuff man. Nowadays they are called chocolate kisses. Does the french name translate to titties btw lol
How offensive a given word can be depends on what's going on socially at the time. Around your grandma's time, this word was suddenly becoming VERY offensive, but depending on where they lived, the idea may not have sunk in yet.
I know that in rural areas at the time, especially in the western states, they were often isolated from current events enough that culture only shifted when someone moved away and then came back with a new perspective.
1 - My mom use to do that, too, until I told her it was really offensive. Took a few times of when she'd say it that I'd automatically correct her by saying 'Brazil nuts' instead for her to stop. Same with N* rigging instead of just saying tinkered with / worked on. As for what was wrong with these people? Born and raised in a different era altogether, and where the majority of people who were saying it came from the south where it was 'normal'. It's taken time for next generations of kids to
2 - go 'that's not right' and for people who actually bothered to get to know other people from different ethnicities and skin tones were like 'that's not okay to say to my friend!' when change really started to happen, mentalities began shifting, and where we're at today where it's NOT okay and NOT normal to say it.
Just a shame it's only been within decades this positive move away from old toxic ways has happened. Not centuries.
They hear something other people think is funny and mimic it elsewhere only to find out most people don’t find it funny. Then they tell themselves people can’t take a joke. Ignorance even amongst the educated make no mistake.
We grew up with all the N weird sayings and as children we never connected that it was derogatory towards black people (I know, it feels crazy even saying that). We lived in a very small conservative town in Colorado in the 70s & 80s and that was just part of the lingo there. As an adult I recognize just how fucked up that is, it was just how things were said there.
I'll never forget the day I learned that "Eeny Minnie Miney Moe" wasn't originally followed up by "catch a tiger by the toe" after an old lady sang it out while selecting her scratch ticket in front of me at the gas station.
To be honest, I think those words are not inherently bad, but because of how they are associated with people's behavior. Other slurs for sure can be more directly hurtful. But a kid can only see the surface-level stuff. It doesn't know that below, there are much deeper running roots of racism that can resurface at any time. An adult knows that using these words with their connotations even in an innocent context is working to keep those roots alive and close to the surface.
Not your fault, as long as you took the time to learn better. That’s the insidious part, is that it’s deep enough that “It’s just how things are done,” and questioning the way things work is so often met with punishment and ridicule.

Hey, @OP - where's the problem?

Spiderhammulaney
Turns out the word for the color black in a few latin based languages is now a slur in English because of history and slavery and stuff
Whitemannatee
That is horrible!! The taste of black licorice, I mean.
ximzadix
Allens had to change the names of these ones a few years back -

We had a candy called kiss from dark skinned person. (yes you can guess the spelling on that one) They decided to change the name back in 2001.

For those who don't know, let me explain it in a simple way.
You need the N-word pass to use their old name.
Bubbertubs
I cannot I'm good consicence post the old name, but I found this reddit post. this one hits all the bases : r/oldpeoplefacebook https://share.google/hvH8dG9E1DZPlb0pu

Wow! I'm a bit on the old side and live in Texas. Guess I lived in a different part of Texas. We called it liquorice and nuts. Lol
Bubbertubs
I'm from TN, I actually came across this by accident a few months ago.
andwings2go
Oh. OH. I thought it was just cause licorice is gross.

Hey, that's subjective there

Brazil nuts had a similar negative connotation when I was a kid.

Funny how "the word for 'black' in another language" came to be a racial slur and a hate term. Well, not funny at all. Just interesting.
Hammerwell
Don't let them buy black paint in spain.
cousteau
Or Italy, for that matter. I think the name of Montenegro (Crna Gora in Montenegrin) comes from Italian (meaning the same as it would in Spanish).
SterlingArcherSecretAgent
Probably a language barrier since English is not my native language, but ... what? Pals is bad?

This product's name used to imply that the black people you were eating were Black People.

Yeah, just goes to show how times change, and so does the culture. What is considered ok in one era is considered an atrocity in the next

Greetings from germany: Guess what Schoko-Küsse (Chocolate kisses) were called well into the 90's:
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGcjAFsqRjQA3Gp8TKpTyQ21hzf1ABvbX_yXy9NDe6nzwNwNiaWKlCfOgSfGg7ZE6-bxrzkhuJ7fqqv3LA-o9hNiVnCJpd0O50NxbeYWOjGQ69nrsslsHvUk2cykQmNZ1X5EOi0ZGkkZk7v2LPSIsfeqgsnhPEQc_BARxEUnnztM03gEN5ICTWZYS-/w640-h640/negerkuesse-4.jpg
However... the word in german doesn't nearly have the same history as in the US.

OMFG the platter for a hat too...

Yeah in Belgium there is a cookie that in the common tongue is still called "n word titties", not sure if they are common in other countries but they're called Melo Cakes.
Grandpaedd
In Belgium they were colloquially called N- Tits
FlaccidSpleen
LIDL sold Negerküsse here in Denmark up until _very_ recently (def. later than the 90s).
"Neger" is the Danish version of the (non-hard R) N-word and "Kusse" is a vulgar term for vagina.
StrokeFlavoured
Hust *Nogger* Hust.

In France those was called "N-word heads" the name was banned in early 2000's but some old stubborn continue to calls them like that
RecurringNightmare

Sweden raises with their chocolate balls.
WarlockSniper
Same in the Netherlands, both with the name, and with the candy.
Shits goddamned tasty too. Now they are just called "Kisses"
breadedfishstrip
In Belgium we went for the slightly more crude version which is not kisses but tits. Yes, n-Word tits.
WarlockSniper
Hmm tiddies. With a slight racism tinge.
KitteyWolf
looks like the old name was N*word babies :x
SPQAAE
I googled it and found that they were called Chocolate babes but people called then that instead as a slur even further. It looks like they were chocolate and not Licorice too. https://www.reddit.com/r/FuckImOld/comments/1itkww8/before_there_were_sugar_babies_we_had_these_babies/

tylerlarson
It didn't START OUT as a racial slur.

In Norway there's a small chocolate cake known as 'N* dung/poo'.
