On a machine the size of a house (Liebherr LR11000), the engineers put the def tank suction module in the only place you cant replace it without a bunch of extra work.

The tank sits right under the main structural frame, the suction module is roughly 3.5 feet long.

Perfectly lined up to be impossible to get out

It gets stuck about here, oh and its about $3500 and wont work if you bend the new one during installation.

Crane and come along to jack the tank sideways to get it to fit past the frame.

Suction module out of tank

This crane's purpose is to service confined spaces.
Can anything else this small move 1000 tons? Legit question. I know diddly squat about construction.
I assume the trade off for its size was servicibility on some parts.
How often does this part need replacing?

Its a large crawler crane, 1000 metric tons or 1200 us tons capacity. This one in particular is taken apart in a storage yard so I didnt have a picture of the full machine. This component is used for the emissions system that treats the diesel exhaust with urea. They have overly sensitive optical sensors that go bad pretty regularly requiring replacement. Once every few years I'd say.

Engineers don't have to work on the things they design.

Plasma cutter, or acetylene torch, modify that plate.

On a piece of US military equipment, there is a 1/32" difference between having to pull the engine to change a fuel pump(which fails regularly) or be able to change the pump without pulling the engine. Guess which way they went with it?

I was in mx in the AF, saw similar all the time. Part of why I was interested in being an engineer was from working on all that poorly engineered equipment.

Some Komatsu excavators ... you need to demount the counterweight, to change the mechanical fuelpump.. and guess.. those pumps go out in those places where you dont have another crane/excavator on hand to lift 10-250000 lbs of counterweight.

So we just swap in an electric pump...

3.5 feet ≈ 1.07 metres

Well, now we know who owns those tools.

Ive always wanted to have the money to quit my job and track down all the engineers who did things like this and make them explain it to me in detail... under torture

Do you have a go fund me or something. I'm not even kidding. I'd only donate like 10 bucks but I'm still sure you'd get a couple hundred thousand from mechanics that work on Ford's and Rams alone.

Their answer is always, "The accountants thought it would save money."

You’ll probably be disappointed. Generally it’s something dumb like Team A made the suction module way ahead of time and Team B had to fit it into the truck with very limited (and no good) options as to where

Or they're just idiots who don't think about things for more than 3 seconds..... We had some flood damage in the office of the warehouse where I work, they had to replace the servers switches and such, they mounted the cabinet in such a way that now you cannot change the florescent light bulbs in the ceiling....... Or it's malicious to get you to buy more (looking at you Ford and GM)
