And it gets even dumber. MAGAts in TX are blaming the NWS and NOAA for not providing warning, and they are saying that they are happy that their orange god cut funding because those organizations didn't deserve the money if they can't provide warning! Incredible mental gymnastics!

Also important to note that even with warnings the time of day (late at night) and the recent topography (multi-year drought) were also major contributors to the death toll and flood potency. Not to mention a stereotypical Texan's stubborness. Weather data being hamstrung is absolutely moronic, but that flood was more than likely going to have deaths either way.
(Unless we started addresses climate change a decade ago.....but that's another subject)

I'm unsure what the standard practice is in Texas - my experience with camping near rivers in gorges is that warnings are provided anytime there is an expectation of heavy rain. Yes the actual event occurred overnight and the flood sensors did not activate until 1:14AM, but that's why warnings are given early so that people can prepare during the day (and choose to move to higher ground). Maybe the difference is that the areas I've experienced this have already had fatal flash floods.

Also the satellites that collect the atmospheric data to predict hurricanes are military satellites, and Hegseth recently decided that no data from those satellites will be shared with organizations outside the military.

While NOAA has been using DMSP data, they have quite a few more spacecraft at their disposal for collecting data. GOES, S-NPP (for now), and NOAA-20 and -21 are currently up there providing great data. In the pipeline is Quicksounder, JPSS-4 and -3, and NEON.
