It is also worth mentioning that the obsession of American car manufacturers with making vehicles that are too big has a negative influence on the entire industry. We improve miles per gallon performance but cancel out the gain by making the models bigger.
"Why do American cars not sell very well in America?" Well gee, it's basically a free market... maybe it's because American car manufacturers refuse to keep up? Using tariffs to force people to buy American isn't free market... I thought you people were about meritocracy and all that crap... well if American automotive manufacturers are failing, perhaps they should, oh I don't know, get good?
People buy American trucks and SUVs. And they charge enough to Make more money off of those than they can make on 20 small cars. That is why they won’t make them
Well, there's that... and then there's fuel consumption- gas is a LOT more expensive over there. And... have you ever tried to drive an Escalade in an old European village or in Tokyo?
American automakers insist they know what I want and won't listen when I tell them they are wrong. I want an affordable A to B on a budget. Curb weight less than 2500lb, carries 2 people + 50 cuft cargo, and gets 38 MPG or better using only proven drivetrain technology that will reliably last 100k+ miles all while costing less than $250/month to finance.
They don't provide this because I won't let them bloat the vehicle with addons that only raise the profitability.
The worst part of it? They had vehicles doing exactly that in the 1980s. These went away in the 90s for the bigger is better meme that brought us where we are now.
My favorite is all the US automakers have a build option on their website. The only cars you can find on a dealers lot are those bloated package ones. Also you can't order direct from the manufacturer nor will the dealers allow you to order the car you want.
I drive a Hyundai Veloster, stick shift hatchback, and I absolutely agree with you. It has a third door (passenger side) which is great for when I have to put my kid in the back seat. Otherwise it's a funky little commuter car with enough cargo space (with the rear seats folded) to do most anything I need. I love it
Also worth noting, the Spark is fun to drive. Like taking a go cart on the highway. Only speeding ticket I ever got was in a spark because I ended up doing 90mph in a 55mph zone without realizing it.
(Rented a spark to drive from Seattle to Fresno. Stretch of ~5 lane highway dropped from 75 to 55 at an underpass. I was used to driving a beater that limped over 50, that Spark hit 90 smooth as can be while I was focused on traffic on an unfamiliar highway. Cop let me off with 5 over ticket.)

Dude should watch any Top Gear episode where they test american cars.
RetrogradeLlama
Why? Because American cars suck,
Stephen.
I’m also guessing you probably drive something foreign

Isnt the real answer mostly that the streets are smaller and american made cars dont fit?
DarthVaderDidNothingWrong
Not mostly maybe, but also because of that. Main reason probably is because US cars are shit

Why do Asian cars sell just fine in the EU while American cars don't?

This is where "the customer is always right" actually belongs. What customers want to buy is what you should be selling.

So you wanted a Chevy Spark? Why didn't you buy one when they were available? They stopped selling themb ecause no one bought them.
OdinYggd
They didn't sell cause they cost too much. What I actually wanted was the Volt, the hybrid model. But again it never got within reach of my budget.
SomeDetroitGuy
The Chevy Spark had a MSRP starting at $13,600. They were the cheapest vehicle on the market. You can get one today that's 3 years old for under $10k: https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicle/kl8cd6sa5nc039093
