An AI robot employed as a civil servant by the Gumi City Council in South Korea was found unresponsive by the staff. The bot had allegedly fallen down a flight of stairs at around 4pm on June 27, 2024. The robo supervisor was employed by the government as a civil servant in August 2023. It worked from 9 am to 6 pm like a regular employee. The council bot possessed a civil servant card and handled tasks called ‘elevators.’ The robot was found smashed and defunct in the stairwell between the second and first floor of the council building. Per witnesses, the robot was seen to be circling around a specific spot before the incident occurred. Officials stated that pieces of the robot have been collected for forensic examination.

*Roomba equivalent falls down a flight of stairs because robots are dumber than dirt in this shitty dystopia* – Clickbait media: "Replicant slave endowed with human-level intelligence succumbs to ennui and decides to end its miserable existence!"

Well, Marvin would be unsurprised

again: this is not suicide. its a malfunction of systems inside the robot. if you check the log you'll see that it probably didn't "see" the edge. We are NOT in the age of feeling, thinking and self-aware robots or computer systems. its just programming.

“A malfunction of the systems inside” sounds a whole lot like depression for humans

Another side to the AI debate could be the idea that AI advanced enough to understand emotions could count as or be close to being a person. At which point they would have rights like free time, a wage or not being forced to do certain projects they didn't like or even to decide to quit their job.

Yes, it'd be interesting to see how legislators deal with this sort of stuff eventually. Though that's also a bit utopian, as quite a lot of (if not most) humans aren't even in a position to 'enjoy' these supposed rights.

Might make businesses think twice about boasting about how advanced their AI is.

Or even install a front end that makes sure we never hear of it, so they can sell their wares without anyone even knowing there is some hint of self-awareness.... It's a pretty shit rabbit hole tbh o_o
