Herring fishing in Strömstad, Sweden

The image is from 1913 and show herring fishing outside Strömstad. Herring has played a central role since the earliest recoded settlements in Strömstad (the earliest we know about that were into herring are from the 10:th century) The herring was instrumental in Strömstad becoming a town, in mid 16:th century.

The archipelago is pretty special around here, at least to me.

The most important herring periods in northern Bohuslän are 1556-1589, 1747-1809, 1877- 1899. In the earlier centuries, people were generally temporary residents out in the archepelago.

Today, there is still a small fishing fleet in Strömstad, but it is but a small fraction of its former glory.
