You don't need to be in exact situations to understand its use. You can take that example and apply it in similar situations or simply use it to understand the fundamentals and apply it further beyond that. Understanding in quicksand you want to limit movement, make yourself flat if you can't find any purchase on land, throw any heavy objects you are carrying and shimmy back to land. This also applies in any similarly viscous materials but also can help on thin or breaking ice, etc.
I've actually slipped on those a few times. The kids love fruit, and bananas are right near the top of the list. Little kids are messy, and the dogs are sometimes under my feet, blocking the view of the floor. Luckily, the kids have outgrown the "missing the trashcan" phase. The worst phase around that time, though, was the "throwing away dishes or putting trash in the sink" phase.
I've actually got a story about slipping on a banana peel. Was in San Francisco working for the day and was walking back to my car parked on the street looking at my phone. Suddenly my foot slid and, thinking I stepped in shit, started gagging and almost threw up. Turned around, gah damn banana peel. Made me realize cartoons over prepared me for the possibility at a young age and the incident had not happened yet.
Not quicksand, but I did have a run-in with mud that would have left me stranded had I been alone. I stepped off a trash ladder I found and sunk into mid thigh. When I looked back, the ladder was almost gone. I may have been able to lay on my stomach and get out. Luckily, my cousin was there to bring me more stuff to climb out with.
This is still a good one to teach, tbh. Has nobody here seen incidents with bonfires, the skater trick guy with gasoline, and fireworks fuckups where morons set themselves on fire and just... run away??
This may be a stretch, but there was a LOT more smoking, which means more matches and lighters around back then. The likelihood of a kid playing with matches and lighters and catching themselves on fire is probably higher back then than today.
It does happen. It's not just sand that can do that, mucky clay and silt mixtures do that when you mix enough water with them. I've been there. In quicksand, not being your brother. I wouldn't know what that's like.
