Why the gigantic resin/plastic thing overtop of it that adds so much height? Is it not possible to just make the plastic the correct height to begin with?

I assure you the keycap is the correct height for the function/escape key row in Cherry profile, which is the most common mechanical keyboard profile. View my account for many other examples.
I do make keycaps in Cherry profile for different rows which are shorter with a sculpted top. I don't create low profile keycaps as there's too little room between the functional portions and top of the keycap. A couple rows in Cherry profile only allow me ~1mm of headroom; low profile is more restricted.

In the podcast they mentioned none of the actors knew the lights were going to flash multicolored like this beforehand. Knowing their reactions are genuine really makes that scene a little more special lol.

Oh thanks for the suggestion, that is a great idea! Id been thinking of doing a Resident Evil Umbrella keycap next but it's pretty overdone online IMHO.
