Interestingly, it has a lot to do with the railroad. North-South access between the two regions within the Dakota Territory ran along the Minnesota border, or Montana. This made the two proposed capitals - Bismark and Pierre - very isolated. It also produced some resentment in the more-populated South when the capital of the whole territory was placed in Bismark, in the North. By admission into statehood, the residents were fairly adamant that they were distinct communities.

At least one county in PA has extended poll closing times to 10pm due to a software issue, and another extended to 9:30pm because the election officials opened the polls late...

The dry counties are the counties where the bourbon distilleries are located. I'm not kidding. There has to be a hilarious reason for that.
