You can make out the canoe-shaped fossil with the dark core. Found in a stream bed in the greater Columbus (Ohio) area. This is the blue shale just beneath the Ohio Shale (Devonian, about 400 million years ago). This shale is full of other curious fossils and minerals (primarily pyrite and marcasite).

The fungi Prototaxites (see below) were the largest living land organism of their time, reaching a meter wide and 3 meters tall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prototaxites

Prototaxite fossils have been found in the Cleveland Black Shale (which roughly corresponds to the exposed shales in central Ohio).

Dude. I'm in the Columbus area. Would you mind sharing the location so I can see this in person?

That isn't just erosion?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Erosion is required for fossils to be exposed so we can find them.

What I mean is that this looks like a erosion into a different colored layer, rather than a change in color within the same layer.

the blue shale here is very consistent in color and horizontal; the next layer down is white limestone, also horizontal.

any variation in the shale here is typically a fossil or pseudofossil.
