I drew a darker themed mermaid for #mermay in photoshop!

Down below is my process ^o^

Initial sketch

added some basic colors

fixing proportions, adding some ambient light.
Decided to ditch the weird bra altogether lol.
Fixed hair decor.

smoothed skin, worked on the face, added a main light source overhead, adjusted proportions some more.

after rendering the hair, started the process of adding scales! drew my own scale texture and warped it to her tail

cleaned up the scales, finished shading, and added highlights and finished final details!
(I realized I forgot to add back the lines/seaweed on the ground but let's ignore that)

What do you guys think? I still have a lot to improve on but I think i'm getting better at lighting/composition :)

Very nice work! Do you use a drawing tablet or a screen tablet, and which model?

I personally love dark themed mermaids! I painted a ceramic mermaid with a black and white tail and it's my favorite one! Keep it up!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

thank you! ceramics are cool :v

As someone who toils with drawing fish, the scaled from the waist to the knee should be the other way around. Great piece nonetheless!

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

yes! someone said this as well :) thank you!

Ever considered doing a youtube tutorial on this? As a budding digital artist, I need some help lol

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been thinking about it! I think i'll draw a little more and build a bigger base before that though :) I plan to make one this summer

But pokemon art academy, and learn how to blot in shapes, add volume, etc. in simple easy to follow steps. You'll be drawing owls in no time

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just kidding. This is an amazing work of art and I find myself not able to get past the sketchy bit usually so keep it up!

lol thank you! :)

A lot of these aren't really tutorials for complete beginners but make total sense to people that have some experience with drawing.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know, I'm practicing and trying to get the hang of it but in the end it's all about if I had fun drawing

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is beautiful, thank you for sharing! The flow of her wet hair is especially amazing, and I love the seaweed strand adornments. :)

5 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

You mean your nipples?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Needs at least oh I don’t know, ballpark figure, five more. At least

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You sound like me on a second date.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why would venom sacs have nipples?

To suck out the venom

Its gorgeous! One small critique if I may? The scales travel in opposite directions from the knee bend. They should flow from waist to tail.

5 years ago | Likes 367 Dislikes 0

As a tattooer who has drawn way too many koi, that was the first thing I noticed, half the scales are backwards.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Now I can't unsee it. I didn't even notice it.

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

LOL good....

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So... a fish torso has a knee(s) inside?

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ahh I cant unsee it, its ruined.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I can honestly say I've never a mermaid with single direction scales

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Assuming the same logic as fish scales of course!

5 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 0

OH You're absolutely right, I must have flipped the scales the wrong way :')

5 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 0

It's really lovely though. I'm a tattooist and draw scales on dragons and carp on a daily basis. It takes some practice. Honestly, great job

5 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

carp?.. that's a popular tattoo?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure, Japanese tattoos traditionally feature Koi carp, so they are a regular part of western tattooing too. Just as popular as Dragons.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

oh wow thats sick, thank you for pointing this out! I wouldn't have noticed otherwise

5 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

This is a really good piece! Seeing that you are open to some constructive criticism, I can mention one thing as well. It isn't very 1)

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

No problem at all :)
