I haven't booted this thing up in 4 years, but wanted to finally play RDR2 and figured 'WTH, might as well.'

That'll work

Snipped the melted plastic prongs that secure this metal plate by the fan.

Removed before drilling

My mess of a workshop in the garage needs some serious spring cleaning.

Small hole for the stock fan

Sigh.. I was off by a hair. Oh well, I'll enlarge the hole slightly and install a fan with a filter later.. just because.

3 120mm fans for $10 (Amazon), can't argue that. They both received filters next.

Not pretty, but I'm not bothered. I temporarily hooked up a molex plug to a 12v DC jack. I'll finish it neatly later with a proper jack and a toggle switch. Hell, I might even design & 3D print a switch box for it and shrink wrap the wires to keep it cleaner.

Also temporary, but a functional filter to keep dust from being sucked in.
Already much quieter and feels cooler.

I dunno about necessary, but more cooling is more better. Next time you get bored re-paste the cpu. I think ifixit has info on their site.

I saw that, just couldn't be bothered at the time. I will be cutting the stock metal & adding individual heat sinks to the RAM chips later.

Ram isn’t known as a high heat producer
