I didn't see these instructions in my PAAS kit.

We have a small collection, made by my Mom's best friend about 40 years ago. Each line, each symbol represents something (usually religious).

Doing this destroys the chicken embryo.

That involved more fire that I would have expected

it's so relaxing, and the scent of melting beeswax is soothing. I grew up making these and have very lovely memories of watching the candle flame and seeing the wax melt off. and occasionally burning myself.

I didn't know Ukrainians laid eggs...

It's extra impressive that they wore a white shirt while doing this. I'd have that shirt so stained before the second dyeing!

We used to decorate eggs with wax and color for Easter, but without the melting it off after. (My heritage is from near Ukraine.) I've seen these more-decorated (and blown empty) eggs before, but didn't know the rest of the process. Very interesting.

Hell yes geometry +1

My toxic trait is thinking I could do that.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My family does this, but we never empty the eggs. There's a stretch of a few years where you really don't want to break 'em, but then they're fine. Much easier to dye them when they don't want to float on the top. I do wish I knew where to find a kistka like the one in the video.

That’s actually made me go “Wooowwwww” like whatshisface

I can smell this video (I grew up making these and the beeswax and the egg dye are strongly imprinted scent memories for me)

Just think - at any moment during this exacting, precise, demanding, hours-long process, your hand could jiggle and the egg could crack.

they're sturdier than you think! more likely you'll just make an ugly wobbly line (I've made them for years and mine don't look this good lol)

True form of art. Beautiful.

I went to a Ukrainian Catholic school, and making pysanky was one of my favorite activities.

#1 truly incredible art. I always loved these Ukrainian eggs, but had never seen one created before. You are masterful at this craft!

First time around, I thought the candle was making soot for the "black ink" and then they 'switched' to wax. IT WAS WAX ALL ALONG!!!

2 months ago | Likes 203 Dislikes 1

Looks like a small puddle of ink on the wax so they can see the lines.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ohhhh heating the tip to get the wax flowing.

That's a wildly cool tool I wouldn't have otherwise known about

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I knew about tjanting tools for batik, but I've never seen them look like an ink pen before.

Thank you! The whole video I was wondering why he put the fountain pen in the flame and I was going to ask in the comments. Your comment explained it. 💪
