it's so relaxing, and the scent of melting beeswax is soothing. I grew up making these and have very lovely memories of watching the candle flame and seeing the wax melt off. and occasionally burning myself.
We used to decorate eggs with wax and color for Easter, but without the melting it off after. (My heritage is from near Ukraine.) I've seen these more-decorated (and blown empty) eggs before, but didn't know the rest of the process. Very interesting.
My family does this, but we never empty the eggs. There's a stretch of a few years where you really don't want to break 'em, but then they're fine. Much easier to dye them when they don't want to float on the top. I do wish I knew where to find a kistka like the one in the video.
Thank you! The whole video I was wondering why he put the fountain pen in the flame and I was going to ask in the comments. Your comment explained it. 💪

We have a small collection, made by my Mom's best friend about 40 years ago. Each line, each symbol represents something (usually religious).

It's extra impressive that they wore a white shirt while doing this. I'd have that shirt so stained before the second dyeing!

I can smell this video (I grew up making these and the beeswax and the egg dye are strongly imprinted scent memories for me)

Just think - at any moment during this exacting, precise, demanding, hours-long process, your hand could jiggle and the egg could crack.
gabador
they're sturdier than you think! more likely you'll just make an ugly wobbly line (I've made them for years and mine don't look this good lol)

First time around, I thought the candle was making soot for the "black ink" and then they 'switched' to wax. IT WAS WAX ALL ALONG!!!
DocWino
Looks like a small puddle of ink on the wax so they can see the lines.

Ohhhh heating the tip to get the wax flowing.
