#7 I mean if you've ever gone down an inflatable house slide, it's just that, right?

#1 I use that setting for my toast. I still have to push it through a second time, though I turn it down for the second pass.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#1 that's the pork chop setting thank you very much!

#1 there are different kinds of bread, a setting that'll burn the crap out of spongey delicate white bread will barely crisp up a rustic home made bread; the deciding factor when choosing a toast setting is the density of the loaf your slices came from, because white bread is more air by volume than rustic loaves.

#20 And this is why you need to get it in a contract.

#17 until this moment, me too.

I still like trucker hats.

#1 it's strange that every cigarette lighter comes with the innate ability to set my house on fire.

There are many different types of bread with heartier, denser structures then Wonder sponge White.

#1 here in Glasgow you can buy rolls that are deliberately burnt, some people love them

#19 That's one of the modern curses! "May every open parking space you find have a motorcycle in it."

#1 pssh there's a reason for it. Some people are weird. When I worked breakfast shift at McDonald's, I had a regular who required his mcmuffin burnt black. He would check before leaving, and if it wasn't charred black, he'd send it back for another go through the toaster. Pretty cool guy actually, I moved mcdonalds for a promotion and turned out he worked the gas station around the corner from that one and sold me weed from it. Good times.

#9 this exact same stale-ass cringe-ass sexist bullshit is why I muted a subreddit this afternoon. It's lame as shit come on.

#1 Two words: POTATO WAFFLES

#14 I feel like in order for a Transformer to die, they'd have to be destroyed to the state where it isn't worth trying to get it back into a functional car.

#5 Unless it is committed by a group of crows- then it's a murder.

#1 It's really strange there are multiple settings beyond that.

5 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My frozen bagels disagree with you

#22 I was much more neutral with my chaos. I would just go to the cubicle area at my old job when certain people were on vacation and take all of the pens they had around and hide them in every nook and cranny of the cubicle.

#1 My toaster is normal. 1 though 5 and 3 is perfect toast for most bread. But english muffins require turning it all the way up to get it toasted right

5 days ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Also not all things go inside the toaster, some things go on top. Then obviously normal heat won't suffice.

5 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Eggo waffles are supposed to be stored in the freezer. They require more heat to bring to a toast than sliced bread that's at room temperature. Also, room temperature can vary depending on location, thus, bread at 30°F needs more heat than bread at 90°F to toast.. but yeah, my toaster goes all the way to 10, but anything higher than 2 will burn everything, including frozen waffles.

I don't think I've ever used any of my toaster's other settings besides "toast", "bagel", and once or twice as a small scale oven

5 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#5 reminded me of Deathklock https://youtu.be/DOWUHqDZjrA?si=at-pYJLansOxqyK6

Not the batmetal version?

5 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I forgot about that

5 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#1 not everything that goes into the toaster is bread. Some things are thick/frozen.

5 days ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Not all who wander are lost.

5 days ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Sounds like the beginning of a faux-deep thought. "Not everything that goes into the toaster is bread, but everything that comes out of the toaster is toast."

4 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This made me belly laugh so hard. Im gonna remember that.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Geez I’m etching this on MY toaster!!

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Crumpets need the highest setting twice and will still just catch a nice colour

5 days ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

this, slightly crispy at best

#1 I like my toast burnt. Lots of people told me that was unhealthy.... but they're all dead

5 days ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

Did you kill them?

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One could argue that all toast is burnt. I mean I probably wouldn't in my personal life but if I were a lawyer I could prove it in court

5 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My wife's grandmother eats burnt toast with lots of butter spread every morning, and she's 101

5 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As the toaster ages, eventually that setting will barely warm it up

5 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

AI says it's bad. But AI ain't ever made toast.

5 days ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

If AI says it's bad, then it's definitely actually good.

Thanks, AI!

there is stuff on burnt toast (PAHs mostly) that definitely gives mice cancer if you inject it under their skin
it's unclear whether it actually harms humans who eat it on bread, though.
I mean, it's probably bad for you, but so is almost everything else and being happy is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health so in your case it probably balances out
I despise burnt toast, so it's a net negative for me.

5 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My grandparents on my dad's side liked their toast charred all the way across. If they saw any spots that weren't completely blackened, they'd put it back in. I like mine just lightly browned with plenty of softness left. To each their own, I say.

#7 Not so fun fact: the frequency of injuries when using emergency slides is so high that they even limit the number of emergency drills they conduct. One drill from 1991 held under controlled conditions resulted in 49 injuries: "The FAA says the evacuation exercises are necessary, even though about 5% to 10% of test participants invariably end up with broken bones and bruises." https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1991-11-06-fi-830-story.html

5 days ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

that really seems like improvements should be made...
using an emergency exit to escape a burning plane sounds like one of the worst possible times to break an arm or a leg

5 days ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I'm not really sure what changes they could make, the design constraints are pretty rigid.

5 days ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

no idea either
I argue with people on the internet, so naturally I'd be willing to voice an opinion with no training or background, but I would at least want to understand how those injuries are happening first.

5 days ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It sounds pretty good when the alternative is staying in the burning plane

4 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Did a little digging https://www.fire.tc.faa.gov/2007Conference/files/Evacuation/TuesAM/MonajemiInjuries/MonajemiInjuriesPres.pdf.
looks like the main injury sources are "smack into ground" or "hit someone else evacuating" neither of which is easy to mitigate while still meeting the requirement of being able to evacuate everyone in 90 seconds.

5 days ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It looks like 80% are minor injuries like scrapes and bruises and the goal is <5% of participants injured. So you're looking at < 1% risk of serious injuries which, honestly? pretty good for panicked crowd evacuation, panicked crowd is a dangerous beast.

5 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In a non-emergency testing it looks like people *are* injured, but not usually seriously, so I can see why that's considered good enough

5 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Honestly my takeaway is "wow, these are really fucking effective if it can evacuate 380 people in under 2 minutes with only 4 serious injuries"

5 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

that makes sense
and yes, those are impressive numbers for crowds on the move
