Whatever you do, don't ask a buddy to help you; because that's what probably got someone into this mess.

start by shutting everything off!
control that it stays turned off!
label every cable with what you know and are surewhat it is!
rip out everything from the top and fix the cables onto the wall without damaging them
measure out your new electrical box, fix it onto the wall and guide the cables into it!
connect everything according to the labels you hopefully made beforehand!
turn on main power and continue with every curcuit to chek if ones faulty!
please tell me you are an electrician!!

Shut everything off, rip everything out, start again.
