It's a strech/smear technique used in TONS of 2D animation.

Check out the documentary about Floyd Norman, first African American animator at Disney. He's still doing art daily on his FB page.

The Sword in the Stone is a great old movie. My little boy likes it, surprised me given how old it is.

Classics never die, they just grow old gracefully.

When animation still had a soul.

My god it’s almost as if rather than being rendered by a computer it was hand drawn as dozens of frames for every second of film!

That ain't half bad, but have you seen the scene in Pinocchio where he's in a cage and the cage is swinging back and forth.

Sword and the Stone was my favorite Disney movie as a kid. Always happy to see it getting some love.

I LOVE the extra line work you saw in the old Disney movies, devastated when the 'digitally cleaned up' versions started coming out.

I've decided merlin is a time traveling Roshi. Or Roshi is a time traveling merlin.

Merlin knows the future in that movie! He may be from 2022 or he may be just a seer but it really seemed like time travel.

I really do miss this style of animation.

This wasn't even their "golden" era. Probably the most impressive though is still Sleeping Beauty, the details are confounding.
Sleeping beauty is my all time favorite Disney movie.
Lots of acting and then rotoscoping over each frame. They also recycled those frames between films. The dances in Robin Hood for example.
Those techniques were more heavily used before/after SB (first from inexperience, then b/c of budget cuts). SB is the OG masterpiece.
I was thinking Snow White accidentally. lol
