The irony being that a country that actively takes care of its people would lead to a country more would be willing to join the military to help serve. Bonus benefit, they wouldn't be desperate people with no where else to go or all have bloodlust fantasies, so we'd get higher quality recruits, too.

Not quite, because the soldiers don't get to own anything. They don't get a say in anything. They're just handed free food and housing so the state can more easily get them to kill their fellow man for some other nation's oil. The definition of socialism is **the people** owning the means of production, not the government.
