The irony being that a country that actively takes care of its people would lead to a country more would be willing to join the military to help serve. Bonus benefit, they wouldn't be desperate people with no where else to go or all have bloodlust fantasies, so we'd get higher quality recruits, too.
If you get education from the military, and they turn you into someone who actively wants to bring other people in the military, you didn't get free education, only free indoctrination.
Tbf … the government owning the means of production, distribution, and exchange is the very definition of socialism. Wrt the military .. that’s exactly what the government is doing .. so it’s not a shock that they would offer “socialist” benefits 😉
Not quite, because the soldiers don't get to own anything. They don't get a say in anything. They're just handed free food and housing so the state can more easily get them to kill their fellow man for some other nation's oil. The definition of socialism is **the people** owning the means of production, not the government.
So people's worth is only tied to what they can provide beforehand? What a shitty world view. People deserve basic necessities regardless of what they can or do "earn".
The US Army paid back my student loans and all I had to do was carry an M249 thru the mud of Bavaria for a few years... I did flip an M113 once and got a cool chin scar off the driver's hatch...
In theory a job should pay enough that you can afford said nice things. But instead billionaires are trying to increase their high school and so siphon off all the wealth and buy politicians to make this even easier for them.

They are denied to us so that Army recruiters can offer them, otherwise the machine runs out of meat.

How else are you going to prop up the military hegemony and support the military industrial complex?
Banzai51
Remember, promising those things and delivering those things are two entirely separate things. Ask a vet.

From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.
thundercactus
I think it would be more accurate to say the means of production owns the military.

To be fair, recruiters will tell you any damn thing they think you want to hear to get you to sign.

Because you're doing work in exchange for that :|

If you are paying taxes it means you are working for it.
rivitingone
Wait, you mean if I have to work for it, it's not really free?
dixxienormus
Have you ever been conned and scammed America? Yes you have.
Higure
The government providing it to anyone and everyone without them having "earned" it first is the "un-American" thing.
EmperorScorpiousII
So people's worth is only tied to what they can provide beforehand? What a shitty world view. People deserve basic necessities regardless of what they can or do "earn".
Higure
I totally agree. But that's the US way.
EmperorScorpiousII
Imagine a better world and fight for what should be instead of accepting what is.
Higure
I'm not accepting it. But there is no harm in acknowledging it.
rusty42marlin
Because at the end of the day, it's not free.
idiotsonfire
Nobody would join the goddamn military if risking your life and health wasn't tied to those things being "earned," but only while you serve.
Hailthecrow5
Because you're sacrificing your life, in return for those things.
brownribbon
A vanishing small percentage of armed forces personnel are KIA
SavageDrums
How many come home with PTSD or otherwise severely altered lives?
brownribbon
A larger percent but still pretty small compared to the overall size of the DoD
DoctorEleven
*they're hoping you sacrifice your life for a chance at getting those things.
rhixhikaru
And getting blown up, PTSD, and everything that comes from selling your body to the military

How would we get oil?

Good question!

Legally being allowed to murder unarmed civilians in cold blood while also eating as much food as you want without gaining any weight?

When they start turning the military on protesters and the poor, then they will be anti-american

Lovingimpaler
I first read that as sarcasm, but no TFG actually means it. As a veteran, that idiot can fuck right off.
bippityboppitybuttsex
I literally joined the US Army (11B, USAREUR) to get my student loans paid off ...

"If we provide people with the things they need we can't force them to die for our profits." There. Fixed it.
