Sad but true

Capitalism creates scarcity and cruelty.

China has hundreds of bullet trains, thousands of wind farms, and solar/EV dominance.

The US has measles outbreaks and Oval Office stock manipulation as MAGA attacks the best and brightest.

Dude many countries have good train infrastructure. I wish the US was one of them.

The US has excellent rail infrastructure, it's just not used for people.

I was able to take the train home from college, and it was great as all I had to do was board, spend some time watching movies & reading, then get off. Then the train would arrive and I'd disembark. Only downside is it was a 7 1/2 hour trainride versus a <4 hour drive.

Question: can the US safely have it? Europe lacks any kind of moose or Bears or bison where the speedy rail is. How are you going to stop a train at 300km/h colliding with such behemoths? Not sure whether the speed of the train wins or instead causes derailment

Here the Indian challenge where neither sensors nor low speed prevent accidents : https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/hit-by-train-jumbo-dies-in-uttarakhand/articleshow/106003077.cms

Please point out where the moose, bears and bison are between LA and SF, or NYC to Florida.

Nordics have +250kph trains and there are regular moose collisions. It is basically just put windshield wipers on and report the location, and continue. It's not a big deal. Pic of a train that arrived to Helsinki trainstation. It hit three mooses in northern Finland.

Don't worry, the US is working hard to catch up to China in abusing it's populace

Hey. Don’t sell America short. We also have concentration camps, social points, and sketchy engineering.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but they have BOTH.

The US has all of those and doesn't even have fast trains :(

The social point system is not real and has never been real. One subcommittee suggested it and it was immediately shot down as a dumb idea. You are a victim of western propaganda. What else do you believe is real about China is just propaganda?

They arent going to give you FICO points for your American social credit score for this

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The same people live in Afghanistan. The US solution to the problem was to pay off warlords and shoot anyone over the age of 14 as a suspected militant. Then, after 20 years of devastating death and warfare, to give up and go home and leave their collaborators behind. You don't care about the people, just their propaganda value.

What about the empty cities they have to force people to move to and then work in factories for 80 hours a week anyway?

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Shhhh propaganda

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 7

Uhm, when you read Chinese propaganda, you're not supposed to talk about the human rights violations and genocide. You're supposed to think about the bullet trains and be jealous, you aren't supposed to think about the demographic and housing crisis.

2 weeks ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 6

And when when you read conservative American propaganda, the human rights violations and genocide are the selling point.

#1 As a mechanical engineer, if you think China A) isn't capitalist and B) is actually creating sustainable infrastructure, you're an imbecile. China does one thing: It makes a lot. It doesn't make any of that "a lot" in a way that actually, yknow, works. Hence why Japan has better bullet trains despite being a hundredth the size

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Maybe unrelated but I learnt a few weeks ago that the Chinese people retire at an age of 60 (men), 50 (female workers) or 55 (female academics). Life expectancy is just one year less than in the US.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dial down the propaganda you are clearly trying to pull off here, chairman mao.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

You mean 'What if we gave homeless people a stab in the butt with anti homeless architecture?'

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Of course China can build trains faster than god. Have you even seen god build a train?

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even an outdoor closet would be great. US is choosing to just build prisons instead of helping homeless

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

China also has a bunch of accidents due to poor construction or using sketchy materials. They also wasted like, so much money making random shit. Like they built a whole city that no one lives in.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

None of that has anything to do with how "clever" Chinese or American engineers are

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey now, any one of us could build a train faster than God, as God never built any trains. Be the change you wanna see in the world.

"How can we make a bench look like a bench, but not be a bench? I want people to look at the bench and think it's a bench, but seriously injure someone trying to sleep on the bench. Do people need to be able to sit on the bench? Not really. Those people are almost homeless, so make them stand. Thank you american engineers!"

Let’s not pretend China is some kind of utopia. A lot of these advances are made by crushing their citizenry.

2 weeks ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 4

At this point I think it's on purpose. Like Russian trolls, there's Chinese trolls. None of the dictatorships are good. None of the imperialist countries are good. We can live in a world where great countries don't exist, where a lot of them are a huge disappointment. No need to make up fairy tales about the reality. You can take notes on stuff that work in other countries without idolising the country.

China is absolutely a crony capitalist state, you propagandist bot.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Or have them harvest crops far from where they live

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Trump tricks China into becoming the dominant world super power. While the US joins Russia as a super corrupt ex-power.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the issue isnt capitalism really, its lack of safety nets & social safety progs. capitalism is great, you should be able to use capitalism to be rich and improve your lifestyle, its not necessarily bad, the bad part is we dont have a floor for least acceptable living conditions. like, if being homeless meant you have a 400 sq ft studio and access to basic produce to cook for yourself during the week, it would be fine, like bezos can have his megayacht and we can also get rid of homelessness.

Nah, our engineers are saying shit like the gulf states are gonna wash away and peopel are gonna die if we don't do something. OR that these houses aren't being built to proper spec, those are tech bros pushing the AI nonsense drinking up more power than some states.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

China is also asking, "how many nets do we need to stop our people killing themselves?" Or "why are there black people in my movie?"

But yes they are absolutely...super clever. Nothing they build every randomly falls apart...

The water falling from the roof of the tunnel going under the ocean is not leakage, it is a feature!

Just like the indoor rain of many large Chinese buildings!

I'm not sure China is the perfect society you think it is.

2 weeks ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 6

Nobody says it is

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would have pointed to the Scandinavian countries, then the rest of Europe/Canada, before I ever went to China for a model of a good society.

2 weeks ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 3

Strawman. They didn't say it was perfect. They implied they are making far better investments in to public infrastructure, which is unarguably true. The social aspects of their government policies, however, can be argued.

2 weeks ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

They use their people as slaves.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Are you talking about the US or China?

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I don’t think @op is saying “perfect society”.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Especially since China's bullet trains are absolutely shit tier compared to Japan, their solar farms are worse than the US and Germany's, and their wind power pales in comparison to most of europe's. The only thing China does is "a lot." They don't do that "a lot" WELL, in fact they do "a lot" by cutting corners everywhere they can

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

No one said anything about perfection. It's better than the U.S. is what was implied and believe it or not there's a lot of evidence to support that.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A few prime examples would be the infrastructure, the economy, believe it or not the quality of life, the fewer prisons, the life expectancy and even Healthcare rank better than the U.S.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It just goes to show how far the U.S. has sunk.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've heard a lot about what China does to its citizens. The US is working hard to catch up, but bragging about bullet trains and solar panels is kind of sad. Other countries do both of those better and don't crap on their people.

The social credit system is not real and has never been real.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

but in us there is. It's called simply "FICO score".

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The problem with China's current growth is that it requires maintenance, the very problem that the US is currently feeling the long, drawn out pain of. Rail ways are fantastic, but need money and labor invested for the lifetime of the infrastructure, which the US failed to do. If China does not upkeep their currently brand new systems, they will wither and rot. The more you make, the more to maintain. I'm not going to address the AI and stuff.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yLzfNTrULg One railway tunnel collapse away from economic devastation in the USA.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Unlike China the US spends on one parties wants only for it to be taken down with more spending by the opposite party who opposed whatever. Trillions wasted. And China does upkeep their system better than the US as well. Just look at the railways.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

The rail ways were built in China in 2007 and after for most if not all of their high speed rails. It hasn't been twenty years for that infrastructure to even get major maintenance. But at least they actually have high speed rail instead of the asphalt hell scape across most of the US

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While technically true, that’s ultimately a poor argument for one-party permanent rule such that exists in China.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

You're right, but there are other forms of government than totalitarianism and two diametrically opposed parties. European ones, for example, tend (with some exceptions, of course) to serve their people reasonably well.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Having more parties to choose from does no good when Europeans vote for right-wing parties.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do believe the only thing more destructive than the two party system is the one party system. It would be really good for the US to get back to either a multi party system, or a no party system. Sadly I am not familiar with the specifics of most EU countries political systems, but it seems to work better than this more often than not
