My bro is working on Christmas Island right now while the crabs are happening. He often has to have a colleague rake the crabs out of the way when they're driving somewhere.
??? People do cling to their habits.... Nothing is absolutely. Ever. Everything is in flux constantly. And so yeah, people &/or their vehicles could...& should...stay off the road(s) during crab migration periods. They'll be tracked & announced ahead of time. So no surprises. People can deal.
Reminds me of when I was in rural Costa Rica. Walking home at night, darker then the inside of a cow, and all you could hear was the crabs as they opened before you and closed behind you
I wasn't reading at all and I thought it was a video of a bunch of little crabs being flattened. Until they weren't. I was just expecting the worst and I'm glad they're ok
Land Rovers?!??! You're calling the majestic 78 series Toyota LandCruiser 'Troop Carrier' a Land Rover? for shame man! For Shame. If you want to go bush you get a Land Rover. If you want to come back you get a LandCruiser
I mean… you’re kinda just describing how language evolution works? The meaning of words being decided by consensus is not some new concept, and it’s certainly not something to lament.
there's a difference between evolution and straight up deciding to change the meaning to be 180 degrees the opposite. one is acceptable the other is bullshit. creating slang, cool. you hear a word for the first time and invent your own meaning, that's just ignorant.
The negative meaning of "chuff" is from 1825, the positive meaning is from 1855. "Chuffed" as an adjective specifically wasn't used until 1957, and while the first usage was positive, it's pretty much always been regional as to what it has meant. And "chuff" as a word referred to having chubby cheeks in the 1500s. So a complaint about the "age we live in" in regards to "chuffed" is in fact about the evolution of a word over several hundred years. It's not ignorant, it's language being complex.
There really isn't a difference. If enough people start using "smile" to describe what we'd call a "frown", then a new acceptable definition forms. Sometimes, it's just a fad and fades away, leaving the original meaning, other times it sticks. "nice" used to mean simple or foolish. "awful" used to describe something that was impressive / "full of awe", whereas now it means nearly the opposite. I realize it's disconcerting to have things change out from under you, but that is language evolution.
Good morning. I sit here now, drinking my morning cup of tea, and I'm chuffed to bits to see one of my fellow countrymen has already confirmed this. Top notch.

Thats pretty instinctual for most animals. Zig-zags are slower so the natural response is to run like it's a predator chasing you and go straight.

Doc says you’ve got crabs
wermer
Except that last one there. Oof. Took that rear tire like a champ though.
J4nein4ne
This only kills a smaller fraction of the crabs.
lurkertron5000
I don't see any go under the tires.
I see one at the front who seems fully stuck. Hope he got out eventually

You aren't contributing here in any positive way.

Imagine the first few trips down that road before they decided to create those wheel guards.

Imagine realizing you need a second one on the back tires because they just run right back under the car.

The crab that thought of the back pair knew the limitations of his kind, for sure.

Land Rovers in Australia have crab plows as standard equipment, I believe. Also handy for scooping drop bears out of the way.

isn't "mildly chuffed" like, the base state of crab existence, though?

No they are busy turning everything else into crab
InfocalypseRising
Doesn't "chuffed" mean "pleased?"
xvasair
Crab probably thought it way more polite than normal cars
NewTitaniumCorvid
🇬🇧 Yes it does. Mildly miffed would be more appropriate.

Pleased or pissed off. It is a weird word that also means its opposite.

we live in an age where words mean whatever people want them to unfortunately.

Night shift Brit here, chuffed does mean pleased/happy, "miffed" would fit better for a negative emotion
Neednoggle
The waking world appreciates your service.

I’m chuffed to bollocks that you cleared up this little misunderstanding.
Also: wtf my dude, I hope you can get/have got some sleep…
KoreanViking
Traditionally it means pleased, but we might be seeing the early stages of semantic broadening and the rise of a new Janus word due to an abundance of sarcastic use! https://www.merriam-webster.com/wordplay/words-own-opposites
spittytrinkles
I despise the law of common usage. Yet it seems to make itself valid non the less, irregardlessly.
KoreanViking
One part of me wholeheartedly agrees, while another part is off cackling with anarchistic glee
chiefrunswithscissors
Or this person just doesn't know what the word means
JetstreamGW
I mean... "Egregious" used to mean "very good." Until it didn't anymore. That's literally how words work.
chiefrunswithscissors
Just because that's how it works sometimes doesn't mean the meaning of a word is about to change because one person used it incorrectly
