Should my game natively run on Linux, or is Steam OS good enough now?

Hey there!

I was updating the planning for my game and started to think about the topic. Since Uncharted Sectors will be published on Steam, it will be playable on Linux using Compatibility Mode even if I don't specifically target Linux itself. I myself play on an Ubuntu and this allows me to play almost every Windows game (old ones are more capricious, but recent ones are ok).

So I'm wondering, is there really an advantage to have native Linux support nowadays? As a solo dev, the thing I lack the most is time. The days/weeks/months it would take me to add it and fix all the probable bugs it entails could be used to improve the game itself or add features instead for example.

TL;DR: yes.
With the way Microsoft is going, there may be an influx of new *nix users. If more mainstream and indie titles were *nix-compatible, it will make the platform more appealing.

My game will be published on Steam though, which allow to use Proton very easily to run any kind of game on Linux, so in a sense almost every game is compatible and mine will automatically be. I'm trying to find if there are real advantages to make a native build for my players instead of relying on Steam

Ahh, I misunderstood the assignment.
Best luck to you, I hope you go on to become a great game designer.

In the end I think it's what I will do indeed, some people also reported having better performance using Proton than a true Linux build in some cases so if it's to provide a worse experience... Thanks for your answer :)

Oh and you've got me curious, what do you mean by treating the Steam Deck like a console? What problematic things devs do with it that makes you say that? (To be sure I avoid the pitfall!)
