I'm retrofitting a shower. I'm planning to place the backer board against 1 and 2. I don't know what's the best way to put a piece of wood between 3 and 4 so that I can secure the shower mixing unit in since there's a pipe (5) in the way (half way in). I thought about screw in from the side, but as you can see in the 2nd picture, there are pipes in the way and it's kinda hard to get the impact drill in to drive the screw in to secure it.

Where is the center of that wall? It’s going look weird if the mixing valve isn’t centered on the wall and with the shower head.

Pocket screw looks like it would work best there..

You should be able to toenail a block in between the black pipe and the stud since you have access from behind. My main concern is the depth of the valve…

What’s your concern about the depth of the valve?

The valve needs to be at a certain depth in order for everything to be flush with the tile. The valve instructions will tell you what the depth is. You’ll have to account for the thickness of your backer board and the tile.
