I can't log in, all but one person on Discord say my account has disappeared, completely. I tried the app, I tried the desktop. It says my username no longer exists. Unknown Error trying to sign in, or "This username doesn't Exist."
On the app, I keep getting a message that says "You have signed out, sign back in." Which, uh, apparently I can't, because apparently, without warning, my account got axed. Apparently my old account, @CodyBurkett is still visible to some, but it is garbled and posts are missing, or it only occasionally loads the profile, and this has me suspicious AF. (Tellingly--I can't seem to tag it here.)
I also heard that @BiNorwayBoyExile got their account nuked/deleted too, so maybe something is going on with folks of a more liberal bent here, or at least, popular, and I want to make people aware of it. I am rightly angry if this is the case, as i have been a member of this community for years.
No warnings at all. Nothing in spam, or anywhere else, though I did get this message this morning re: my support ticket, that apparently my account was flagged due to a "restriction on my account."
(I suppose this could all be because it was the 29th yesterday and appar and the servers here are run by hamsters in spinny wheels, but if not... damn, there goes a nice meme archive for you, as well as MANY posts i had queued for weekends, about meads, and about birds. And my epic post for the 1,493'rd iteration of the Return of the Meme series.)
If I get nuked again, it was an honor and a privilege posting 1,426 days of memes, almost consecutively. Don't give up the fight against Facism. Don't let the bastards win.
In the meantime, all the esoteric bird, dinosaur, history, Buddhist and Christian theology, LOTR, Star Trek, and general angst shitposting that you've perhaps come to love from me will continue, from this account.

There’s been a lot of weird shit happening with Imgur lately. For me personally, Issues commenting on some posts while still being able to comment on others. Specifically, trying to comment on Israeli genocide posts and getting weird error messages piqued my suspicions.

Yeah, Imgur banned my account that ive had since the website launched a while back too. No reply from staff or anything other than saying I violated the rules, which i've absolutely not done. The entire system is a fucking mess.

I also had login difficulties for a couple of days. Sometimes I would appear signed in but none of my posts or comments would load, then it would kick me off again. I attributed it to the 29th.

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. No warning. I could lurk, but I couldn't comment or post. I lodged a ticket and heard nothing for two weeks. Then I lodged another one requesting that they look again as to why I was locked out. A week later an got an apology saying I had been blocked by accident, and they reinstated my access. I'm just assuming it's an A.I. thing. Not to say I haven't had warnings that I deserved, though.

On December almost EXACTLY the same thing happened to a lot of old accounts including mine, i created a support ticket and in the end they fixed them all within a couple days. I hope that without the original people they can manage to find WTF failed and fix them again

Yeah, it's all bullshit. I bought a domain name, and was coding all weekend. Nothing to share yet... but storage costs have come down so much lately, and my math suggests a site could cover costs, without significant engineering.

It's not the storage that will cost, but the data traffic. If you run something like imgur on AWS, you're looking at multiple thousands a month just to cover the infrastructure. If you run it on something not-AWS, you're still looking at a significant chunk of change, because something like imgur isn't going to run off a single 20 buck VPS. Heck, back in the day it was down more than it was up due to the server getting overloaded... I do like the idea, though!

I'm already working with various Cloudflare tools & it will have a CDN doing all image delivery. Most of the one-click alternatives are not designed for load or security. They also don't have moderation or content controls built-in. That's what scares me. Most countries do not have size exemptions for social media sites. So I have to moderate like the big boys, on day one. I spent lunch looking at anti-CSAM tools, and digging into Australia's social media ban. Also ads, b/c this won't be cheap.

And there you have it. As soon as you say "ads", you're already on the slippery slope to enshittification, because the only way for your ads to make money is to keep the advertisers happy, which means basically becoming imgur lite. In my humble opinion :) Not trying to put you down, it's a great idea, but in the current tech climate it's going to be... difficult.
