In the year 2525, if man is still alive, If woman can survive, they may find
In the year 3535, ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lie
Everything you think, do and say is in the pill you took today
In the year 4545, you ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew Nobody's gonna look at you

The ring is unstable (c)

ah yes the giant ring around the planet that makes all the most fertile and temperate growing zones around the equator get zero sunlight seems like a great idea

Oh, you've met a capitalist then?

Easily (for relative values of "easy") fix - also have massive mirrors in orbit that can redirect sunlight around the edges of the ring to where it is needed.

Can be used for climate control, weather control, power generation...and probably an effective orbital weapon against any uppity surface dwellers.

do you want to fight a global warming or what?
shadowing the hottest equatorial zones could be actually beneficial
especially if you leave some of the sun exposure, like half of it

You'd make the most important ecosystem on earth ( aside from the oceans) collapse if you shadow it. The equatorial forests produce a huge part of our oxygen and they are one of the biggest players for reduction of CO2. Do you remember why we have global warming? Do you maybe remember that CO2 is the main cause of it? Do you really think that it's a good idea to do what you suggest?

Totally shadowing if would be definitely bad.
But if you shadow it like 50%, it would shift it from equatorial to moderate. The hardwood forests are good binders of CO2 also, if not even better, as they grow slower, but the decay is slower too. Also most of the equatorial zone is the ocean, cooling it down would improve oxygen solubility, so there will be richer plankton which is even more important for photosynthesis than the forests. Also more fish to cover the food shortage.
