Why are people doing this? It's inherently annoying having to open another tab to view what is, invariably, a poor quality gif that looks like it was lifted from the tumblr store. Is this some sort of protest against imgur? New users being clueless? Or some other factor I'm not considering?

The enshittification continues.

Its Imgur doing it. Its where they're linking gifs from.

Imgur took away the old library of reaction GIFs that was easy to use on mobile and now send you to giphy. And the links don't always display/resolve right.

4 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I don't ever see them embedded. It's a link every time.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is dumb as fuck, I don't mind saying.

4 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

It's why I keep my own library of gifs on my phone. Not only is it versatile (using them on multiple platforms) but it also allows me to curate my own style/interests. A lot of the time I can't find what I want on the giphy/tenor platforms so I just have to go Google it anyway.

I have a folder of the gifs and images saved on Imgur so they’re not taking up room on my phone. I suppose I can download them some time, but just easier to go to the folder from the mobile app.

the gif search has also been acting weird where its not finding a lot of stuff that it used to

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I grumbled about this too. MartynMage said they had reallocated resources to prioritize work on other improvements. I agree, Giphy is xhitty.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Imgur switched to using giphy for reaction gifs b/c Imgur don't know of a better image host to use...

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

A simple image sharer, so to speak. Pity there isn't currently any website with that motto.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah. Where DO people post images for free these days? I wish there was one that was stable enough to handle high traffic and lots of images.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use the original design Imgur and the Gify gifs/images don't even show up

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They get inlined for me. But recently the Imgur reaction gallery got extended with Giphy gifs and integration has given all kinds of trouble.&ct=g

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've reverted to using my favorites to react with.

4 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I’ve been doing this forever. I can’t remember the last time I was actually able to find the reaction gif I wanted with the in-app search

I don't know what an "non-inline giphy gif" is...

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Inline is something displayed without having to visit elsewhere to see it, like this:

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That doesn't really help me know what the "non-inline" version looks like. Does it show up as a link? Imgur added an option for mobile users to add a gif, but one that doesn't display the image inline?

Like this:

Giphy is another image hosting website.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the old desktop layout of Imgur, and probably some other interfaces as well, the Giphy gifs are not embedded into comments, but look like a link instead (= non-inline):

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ah ha! Thank you. Does this mean the issue is caused by using an outdated version?

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're welcome :) Imgur recently implemented this change, but they haven't yet implemented it into all its interfaces. They started with Android, and they're working their way through the others. The old desktop layout will likely never be updated.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Imgur decided mobile users should have to use Giphy.

4 months ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

An image hosting site... decided to use another competing image hosting site... for reactions? What the fuck.

4 months ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

While the old desktop UI can't display externally hosted images. That's genius. All I see are cryptic URLs.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought comments from people who used the old UI appeared tagged as "Web". I is confuse.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use the old UI to browse and the new UI to comment if my comment will likely exceed 140 characters.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For example, according to this, OP's post was submitted via.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure what that means, and I only see it on threads. Posts in the comment section don't show me from which device or UI they were posted. Anyway, giphy links show up like this in the old UI:

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The only vague upside is that they didn't put it behind a URL shortener, which is the mystery meat of the internet - could be delicious meme, could be malware.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What the flying fuck? Why? Why would you drive traffic to a competing site like that? What idiot is in charge over there?

4 months ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

the idea is for it to be easier indexable and have a better search, with a imgur exclusive library available also.

4 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Indexing is hard....

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

On the one hand, the giphy library is easier to search and find gifs from

On the other - imgur could just fix their own shit and giphys is buggy...

4 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

You have no idea how difficult it is to make a proper search engine. Configuring elastic search is a hell on its own

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I missed the part where that's the problem of the users.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reasons why I only browse imGur on a desktop or laptop, #69420

4 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

So does OP, but apparently using the old UI.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's where the problem with giphy exists the most, though. They'll resolve on the mobile apps.

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No way I'm dragging my pc into the bathroom...

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Mobile browser works fine(ish) too. But only with the new UI, otherwise you need to set the browser in "desktop mode".

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And this is the set up I use to browse dank memes while I poop. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But they took away images on desktop too

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's just combined with posts. They've been wanting to call everything you upload posts for a while now. Even if you don't post them publicly. It's weird, I know.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's great, except now I can't browse and link to the thousands of images I've uploaded over the past 13 years. Just the ones I uploaded after they tied the post and image systems together

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you have to use a link https://PwnageHobo.imgur.com/all like this

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks! There's 63 pages of images I thought I couldn't easily access anymore. I was worried this would be like when they took away albums, and they'd disable the back way not just the convenient links

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

my old all link has 428 images, the new All shows 50?

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

https://l0rdinquisit0r.imgur.com/all so I can find myself again
