Hi imgur, if you're in the IT space you're probably aware of this one already. If you're not in the space, or are just unaware, VMWorkstation 17 and VMFusion 17 are free for personal use.
VMs are great for testing new things before deploying them, learning a new skill without corrupting your personal computer, or great just for trying a different operating system. Before VMWare Workstation was free, your free options were generally VirtualBox, Microsoft Hyper-V, or QEMU. Nothing wrong with any of those, but personally I've found VMWare to be the least argumentative when configuring a new client or setting up a closed network.

See you tomorrow imgur. Until then, if you see this, would you share something that just makes your day a little easier?

Screw Qualcomm, it's not even worth the time to learn anything now from that company.

and vmware was never really worth the time vs other solutions like xen. Now I'd recommend kvm/qemu and xlc and things that use them like virt manager, proxmox etc

Depends on what you want out of it. They all have their pros and cons. I prefer VirtualBox for personal stuff. I find it easier to get things up and running. Each to their own there. On my work machine, if I need VMs then I'll use VMWare as I run multiple at once, and it's better performance-wise. Most of the time though, I just need to run some containers in a linux server, so I highly recommend WSL2 for that if you have a Windows host.

See, for me Vmware is awesome, I have a server than runs 7 vms on it, my workstation running linux has a windows vm for photoshop, and premiere, and my mac has fusion for windows as well. Vmware is great if you're a power user and need to tune the vms. Especially for servers, youve got a lot of control over network configuration.

Hyper-V seems to work well for what I need. It doesn't have a feature to expose a directory on a filesystem of the host inside the guest, which is sometimes annoying, but network file shares work just about as well. But it has been so long since I tried the others. I wonder how they compare, now.

HyperV is fine for one off vms for me typically, the issue comes when I try to set up a closed network for them. It always screws up my host network in the process.

Is this a new thing? Cause I had to pay for Fusion and Workstation 17
Frostycopper
They were acquired by a new company within the last year and are going this route for now.

Best I can tell is it's been a thing since may

That's pretty cool, I mean granted I got keys for fusion from my school. But always had to buy workstation.
