Courtesy of @PectorialMuscles suggestion: the leather-man/multi-tool. Since I can't really post install options for this one I thought I'd look up so of the history of these tiny tool boxes.

Multi-tools go as far back as the Roman Empire, with one pictured above is approximately 1800 years old, features a knife, fork, spoon, pick, and possibly a pipe tamper. Currently on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

If you head over to Wikipedia's page on the Swiss Army knife, you'll see a quote from Moby-Dick (1851) describing many of the same tools we see today in a multi-tool including a cork-screw, tweezers, and screwdrivers.

According to the same article the Swiss army supplied a multi-tool for opening cans and servicing their rifles.

Skipping ahead a whole bunch of history, Leatherman would enter the multi-tool game in 1983. The company's namesake, Tim Leatherman, decided he needed something built around a set of pliers rather than a knife and had the skills to do so.

The tool pictured here is my personal favorite, the Gerber Crucial. Small, lightweight, and fits well in my hand when used as pliers. The Leatherman pictured at the beginning is what PectorialMuscles mentioned in their comment.

As with many other things in the world, 9/11/2001 had reaching repercussions. As a result of the new rules regarding carry-on luggage Wenger suffered and was ultimately bought out by long time rival Victorinox. Both names live on today made by the same parent company.

Personally, a Multi-tool does not replace my screw-driver, my pliers, or my snips. All three of those things preform their function easier and more comfortably than a multi-tool. That said, I would still rather have a multi-tool in my pocket than nothing at all. I can't be expected to carry everything everywhere I go, except through some creative metal origami I can actually carry nearly everything everywhere I go. I don't have to carry a tool box up many flights of stairs. I don't need to make extra trips for more tools. Multi-tools make my days a little easier.

I picked the facts I enjoyed the most from those articles, and I encourage you to click and read them yourselves. I skipped quite a bit of history, and I might have even misunderstood something. Still, this was a fun bit of learning.

See you tomorrow imgur. Until then, if you see this, would you share something that just makes your day a little easier?

Multi-tools. Never the _right_ tool, but often the right _now_ tool.

I have Victorinox Swiss Champ, served me well for the last 28 years on camping trips and at home in a pinch if I couldn't be bothered to find proper tool And a fairly new addition Leatherman Charge Plus TTi

I agree with the sentiment that a mutli-tool is not a replacement. The two most important tools I have on mine are the knife and scissors, since both are dangerous outside a package. Nothing replaces a good pair of pants and whatever hardy tools can fit on them. For instance, a drill can't be replaced by a Leatherman Phillips head, neither can a hammer, but the mutli-tool performs both services in limited fashion.

I retrofitted the letter opener of the Gerber Dime to help move small parts within mechanisms, and got a right-angle flathead screwdriver made from a bobbypin to fit inside the tweezer slot

I got Leatherman Wave+, Blast, PSTII, ST300. And a fistful of SAKs. Ranger, older and current Bw. knives, some fancier stuff. Never needed more pliers than the Leatherman tools supplied.
