Extend the short wall around the stairs to the ceiling. Then knock out the wall and extend that room beside it. The door could be moved to beside the stair. If that room has two entrances you could leave the wall and make it a closet.
Good thinking, though that wall to take down is probably structural, but props on the most practical and value-adding proposal so far. That awkward corner could easily become a large closet, or mini-walk in. I'd say they've done this to allow more light in so it's more spacious and brighter.
That was my first thought, even before realizing it went nowhere, that with that big window, it's just begging for plants. A huge monstera and a fern would be my start. I have great light and would love to fill my rooms with plants, but I have five cats and they will even mess with a pot full of cacti. (I tried it, lol) For years I've wanted to replicate how I once had a philodendron trailing from a pot all across a nearby door and window frame, but sadly, these critters sabotage my efforts.
I think it's probably the leftover of the first owner's mistake. Picked a house for a downslope to the left, but the downslope was to the right, and that meant the cars would have to enter the garage through a hill, or the back porch would face the street. So the builder just turned the basement around, but that meant the stairs ended in the garage. So he moved them just far enough they weren't a hole in anything structural. And that's where they wound up sticking out upstairs.
Check to see if that wall is load bearing before considering any major changes like that. Though dumb, it may need to stay like this... Or spend major $$$$$$ forcing it to work
You could easily put up walls and make it a closet, though. I'd make the back part a closet for the room next to the stairs, and then the "hallway" a closet for the room on the other side. The closet doors would necessitate holes, so those would have some cost if those walls are load-bearing. But way cheaper than moving the walls.
You could just angle the part above the stairs? Part of the room could then have either a closet with a slight angled wall. Or hide the weird wall with a built in seat of some kind in the wall.

The space is tight, but maybe wall it off and put in a Murphy door. At this point you have a few options, and most aren't all mutually exclusive.
1. Turn it into a panic room to avoid raiders after the apocalypse
2. Use your house as a haunted house during Halloween and use that area to pop out behind people and scare them.
3. Have kids, play hide-and-go seek, become champion of your household.
4. Any other of a million things you can do with a hidden room
5. Cask of Amontillado

Add a stairway to the roof and have a roof deck there.
