R2 has lost a lot of weight

They just ripped his holoprojector and memory banks from his dome.

Ok, that is cool

Probably a function of the water droplets drawing heat from you as it evaporates

That's basically how the "holographic" messages were filmed for SW

Or ghosts for other movies

Now show us the Leia message scene!! Neat!!!

This is PEAK Star Wars, damn

But then you sit down and have the projector shining directly in your face.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Kind of sucks that you'd be forced to watch it at an angle. The faux 3D effect is cool, though.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Very cool, but hate to be the Debbie downer, but this is not a hologram. It's just a 2D projection on a medium.

Pew pew goes the laser

I was just reminded (again) how noisy space is!

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like a 2 dimensional image. No depth, couldn't walk around it and see the front of the ships while the back is visible from the other side. So, not a true hologram. But still pretty neat.

so I stare into the projector to watch it

If you bounce the projected image across a couple mirrors first it will make it easier for the mist to catch the image. Source? I worked at Disneyland and went to Disney University.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why would bouncing it off mirrors change anything?

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It helps the photons catch on the mist/steam better. Each bounce spreadsheet the photons apart just a bit. Normally 3 bounces is used to create a better image. In 2014 I worked with a group in DCA trying to make the witch in the cauldron from Brave.

SeaQuest DSV.

Oh wow... now there's a memory that hasn't been triggered in awhile.

Man, Seaquest DSV was great and then it went off the rails into fantasy. ...effing Poseidon, come on.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They wrecked the ship after both of the first 2 seasons, come on guys.

Thought the same thing. We old.

I remember the first time I had a full Dolby 7.2 surround sound system. This was the first movie I watched and listening to the tie fighters flying around you was awe inspiring

I’d buy that for a dollar

Almost 40 years and people still know that saying. Love it.

3 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No, no, my friend, that movie couldn’t have come out 40 years ago! Why that would make me…. Let’s end this conversation

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More cultural impact than Avatar (2009).

Works amazingly well for films with very dark backgrounds and very bright subjects. Cool gadget indeed! Not so much for a boringly lit room with actors talking..

And if you don't mind it being backwards, unless that projector is capable of rear projection and is flipped.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just put the projector at a right angle to the display and have a mirror at 45 degrees to bounce the projection.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s the easiest part

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

assuming it's attached to a computer any good media player should be able to flip it without an issue. never tried it before, but just checked and yeah, can mirror it, flip it, angle it, whatever on mpc-hc, I imagine vlc can do the same

The real draw isn't the clarity, it's that you're watching Star Wars on technology that looks like it's from Star Wars.

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly!

Would be very curious to see the non space scenes.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure it looks great on Tatooine. Gives it that authentic blistering heat look & feel.

3 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So fun fact. Disney's California Adventure actually had a show like that. Mist and fogs sprayed 80 feet in the air and complete surround sound and lighting as the swings come roaring in over your head and into the battle. It's pretty rad

X-Wings* Screw off autocorrect!

I'm not saying it's "not" a fog machine, it looks like an ultrasonic humidifier. But that black hose on the right is throwing me off a bit, every fog machine I have used makes a ton of fog. I'm guessing the real fog machine is off camera and slowly controls the fog output somehow with that hose? (Is this a good guess)

3 months ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

I can tell you, because I had one similar . the humidifier and water is inside the box with laminar like straws to make the fog like a "wall" , and the black big pipe is just connected to the fan that Blows the air in.

I have a setup almost exactly like this for Halloween. The hose is from the glycol fog machine. The fog is piped in to the box where there is an ultrasonic humidifier sitting in a pool of water. The combination of the two helps overcome the disadvantages of either type of fog. It produces a nice controllable fog that doesn't disperse like smoke. For my setup it lets me produce a graveyard-style ground fog.

If it was a real dog machine, it would probably fill up the entire room with fog and leave some glycol residue. Using water vapor is much cleaner. Also, it’s probably pretty difficult to have a nice even flow of mist to project a perfect image on. I’ve seen water screens that use tiny water drops from an overhead bar and they do pretty well, but the drops are bigger and more interspersed. Another solution I’ve seen is a fine mesh that’s used for laser displays.

It's a hazer. It's commonly used for concerts to make light beams visible.

3 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It doesn't look like a hazer to me. The key giveaway is that it isn't creating much of any haze.

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it's really a fog machine it's a shit one. Where's the accumulation of fog?

3 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have an ultrasonic humidifier, I love it, it made the dryness of winter more bearable. It makes a lot of water vapor with "no heat." It puts out way more vapor than what is being shown here, so I do have questions.
