I don't know if they're trying to make satire of the AI paranoia in social media, but they're missing the mark by a mile. Either that or they aren't particularly bright.

Looking at how washed out the photo in that article is, my guess is that this was likewise and someone's thought they would "enhance" this with an overzealous application of a sharpening filter which has created an absolute mess of false edges everywhere.
