This exhibit at the Page Museum shows Sabre-tooth cat (Smilodon fatalis) skulls that were preserved when the animals became trapped in the La Brea Tar Pits. These particular specimens were juveniles - you can see their adult sabre teeth emerging to replace their milk teeth. These badass kittehs would like you to remember that The La Brea Tar Pits literally are “the the tar tar pits.”

My grandfather was a paleontologist, so we used to visit the tar pits when I was a kid (and the fossil fields of Topanga).

Yeah, I mean this stuff is downright recent. Nothing like the hills of South Dakota. But still fascinating!
