Teaching is rewarding (most of the time), but definitely harder than when I started!

I found this a while ago and shared it

True. Not every parent, but enough

This, I feel is the major issue impacting school achievement and safety

and we get blamed when it doesn’t go like they though it would

Veteran teachers are leaving the profession and retiring early, leaving too many new and inexperienced teachers- who are also leaving because they can’t live on a new teacher’s salary.

So, I try to remember this every day

For all you teachers out there!

My wife was a teacher, So relieved when she left that job. My little sister is now a teacher, after 3yrs of working 60+hrs a week, she's now leaving too. I'm once again relieved! It's a super noble and important job, and frantically needed but until conditions improve I wouldn't understand anyone wanting to do it. And this is UK, can't imagine how bad it is in the States

Excellent post. You nailed a lot of the issues that teachers have to deal with. I wish you the best and hope you can withstand all the pressures that go with public teaching. One thought....never give your personal email or cell number to an administrator or parent.

Thank you, for your kindness! I try to stay positive for the kids

I taught a history class as a substitute. I taught a part of the French revolution. I imitated all the principal characters, Danton, Marat, Robespierre, etc... Had all manner of props. I got a standing ovation on the last day!

That's above and beyond! Nice job.

I had fun too!

I am on admin leave for…I’m sure, retaliation. Told on a teacher who verbally abuses her students. That evening there was a complaint filed against me. Coincidence 🤐

Good for you for saying something. I hope your union is behind you. Copy all of your messages, I’ve had emails mysteriously disappear. Good luck, and try to sleep - I know you’re probably not

The bad ones are the worst kind of evil. We're doing our absolute best in horrible situations and these asshats just give those trying to harm us and the school system and our students so much ammo it's disgusting. Good on you for calling out shitty behavior.

My sister is a teacher. I don't know how she does it. Between dealing with administration, barbaric lawmakers, and children, I would go crazy.

You forgot the insane, demanding, idiot parents, too. There's lot of them. (There are also really great people in admin, amazing parents and wonderful, incredible students, but man, the shitheads are the WORST.)

People say nursing is hard. It is but teaching is harder. And thankless. Please continue to show up for your students. You make a difference!

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Thank you. Both of our jobs are hard. I grew up with a nurse, it can be thankless, as well. You are also making a difference

The 'Shit Show' that is American Public Education is a deliberate effort by Rep-Cons to justify 'Voucher Schools' that teach their religion and their version of History. 'White men liberated African Blacks from cannibals and killer lions, to give them rewarding jobs in agriculture, while teaching them Jesus is better than their Witch Doctors!'... /s?

The government wants to privatize education so it can be subscription based. That is why there is an attack on the education system.

In one of my 5 Modern World History classes today, where we started the unit on fascism/totalitarianism, of the 25 kids present (4 just didn’t want to come), 9 were “secretly” on their phones and 2 were sleeping. We were analyzing the info from eps 4 of How to Become a Tyrant on Netflix! Like, bruh. If it was a horror film they all would’ve been so into it…real life *was* horror back then tho!?! I’m trying here!

Those who were their to learn probably loved it! Hopefully, the others are either hearing some of it - or getting the sleep the desperately need/s

I've had some great teachers, I've had some disasters of human beings as teachers. I would love to do an in depth essay study on watching highly skilled teachers so we can start researching classroom techniques like we do medical science.

As hard as teaching is, I do wonder why some people are teachers or stay in the profession. I like to think that all of us started out with enthusiasm and energy

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think "teacher" like "medical doctor" or "police officer" has grown beyond its traditional job limits and needs to be reorganized into more specialized jobs. Curriculum planner, material reviewer, grading and correcting, subject expert...

I recently resigned my position as a teacher because the combination of stressor and grief (I had 4 students die within a year all in horrible circumstances)drove me to the point I was having passive suicidal ideation. Like I didn't want to kill myself, but I felt like if I got hit by a bus on my way to work it would at least mean I didn't have to go in to work. I miss it, and I miss my kids so much. But I'm now working for a non-profit, and I am honestly healthier and taking my work home less

I’m so sorry you had to deal with that huge loss! Some folks find it understand that we care and worry all the time for our students. It can be heart-breaking. I am glad you are doing much better now

Whenever I meet a teacher, I always thank them. And I acknowledge that their job is one of the most important in the world.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

No no, thank YOU. I’m not the hero here. That’s you. So, one thousand times, thank you.

What's funny to me is the people who insist that teachers should be issued guns to stop school shootings. A lot of schools don't even pay for basic supplies like pencils and paper, and suddenly they're going to shell out for guns and ammo?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're already glorified babysitters trying to teach necessary information to kids who don't want to learn it with very limited resources, and know you want to make them part-time cops too? Aren't they already doing enough?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We're not glorified babysitters, please don't call us that. What we do is far harder and every single idea that equates us with "childcare" is a disservice to what we are doing AND efforts to make actual childcare affordable, like it needs to be. It is a by-product that has become far too much a function and it is absolutely horrible. We are highly educated professionals, NOT babysitters, please don't help anyone confuse the two. (I don't assume you meant harm, but this is a HUGE problem.)

#2 this is an equilibrium sort of deal, a kid doing bad in a class means something is up, figure out why instead of pinning the blame solely on the kid or the educator

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

This is very true. My own son is dealing with the same learning disability as my brother when he was in school. Its easy to place blame. It’s not easy to actually work on solutions, but we know know better now and so we try to do better

Sometimes behavioral issues are because of family conflicts, sometimes abuse. There is research today connecting abuse to behavior, drugs, homelessness, etc. It will vary, but in the 60's, 70's, and 80's it was less socially acceptable to speak about abuse, so a lot of issues flew under the radar.

#7 I’m a dude who teaches teenagers I’ll probably pass on the hugs but otherwise a good idea. Great post!

Haha! I don’t blame you at all! Thank you for being there for the teens

These recent attacks on teaching have a goal. To bully good educators out of the field, to dismantle public education and have public money funneled to private Charter schools. More Perfect Union: https://youtu.be/jtA8Rx3jqhw

I did 2 semesters of education classes before I decided I didn't want to deal with that shit for the rest of my life. And that was like 18 years ago, I couldn't imagine wanting to teach now.

This is actually extremely on point. Look into Betty de vaus I think her name was. She was part of the Trump admin and I'm charge of education. She nuked the department.

She and her shitty family suck. Made their billions on direct marketing pyramid scheme.

It's the rich that gets the pleasure, its the poor that gets the blame

Charter schools are not schools. They are idiot indoctrination centers.

Republicans literally believe the government shouldn't exist and all government activity should be opposed. I feel like many people in the middle and on the left don't really think through the consequences of that position and how Republicans won't ever stop. They can't be placated or satisfied, they must be opposed and destroyed like the treasonous saboteurs they are.
