When I think of sculpture I am astonished by, this is the level I think of.

Look at the lace over her toes!! I can’t wrap my head around how the artist made it look like it was transparent.

This lace. Wow.

The veil.

Switching gears.

This post was an adventure! Great stuff.

I’m surprised the Veil of Christ wasn’t in the pictures with sculptures. While you have added other favorites of mine, that one is at the top to see in person.

It's been a while since I've seen something intentionally beautiful. Thanks.

"David" is more interesting than accurate. The hands are different sizes, his head is disproportionately large, and his legs and genitals are abnormally small. But that's a feature! The distance from the viewer's eyes to each of the parts imparts a foreshortening. Every part was sized so that from a normal man's eyes, to how much higher each part was when the statue was on its original pedestal, everything would scale so its appearance was exactly in proportion as an ideal man.

#16 this is an up-close view of the shockwave from breaking the sound barrier, is that right?

What a great ride. Thank you.

#3 Is this from that amazing sculpture in the Met Museum of a father condemned to starvation along with his 4 sons? I saw it first as an older teen and couldn't help but cry at seeing the intensity of emotion depicted in that sculpture. It's seared in my memory half a century later. OK, I looked it up and think I'm correct: https://www.tripimprover.com/blog/ugolino-and-his-sons-by-jean-baptiste-carpeaux

Allow me to contribute to your marble interests a couple of my favorites...

Logging on just to comment on this: just like the veiled virgin bust, this is, down right, fucking insane!

When I saw it over 20 years ago, I was told that nazis cut the rope during the war because they couldn’t believe it was one piece. And it was right next to my favorite Veil of Christ. Fascinating little church especially the basement

#17 This is AI. There are plenty of images like this without AI. If you can't tell, the lack of a pilot despite a clear cockpit, the equal sized vertical stabilizers, the non-symmetrical cloud around the jet, and many more.

Da doi.

Thinking #30 is also AI; it's a shame. @OP, solid dump otherwise. Just leave out the shlop.

Lots more AI. I stop scrolling when I see it these days

I have done so insane amounts of studies of veiled virgin, It iss probably one of the best executed sculptures in art history. Absolutely stunning piece of work.

Whenever I see it my brain can't parse that it's not multiple layers of stone

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

What sorts of tools are used for such fine detailing?

5 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Tiny ones, I'll bet

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

this is the absolute insane part ... its a marble carving ... so ever smaller chisels and some sort of sanding agents and god knows what.

5 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yeah I can imagine multi axis cnc machines with end mills doing work like that but it's hard to wrap my head around the idea of someone doing that with chisels by hand

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The unyielding pursuit of perfection in regards to your "god knows what".
